What a drag! Alexander Skarsgard arrives at premiere of Diary Of A Teenage Girl dressed as a woman

When you're 6ft 4in, heels are not always necessary.

But Alexander Skarsgard certainly wasn't giving up the chance to wear his favourite pair on Monday night.

The actor arrived in full drag for the San Francisco premiere of his film Diary Of A Teenage Girl.

The Swede wore a dazzling floor length golden gown, that tantalizingly showed off his burly arms and bulging back muscles.

On top of his considerable frame and high heels, the True Blood star wore his beautiful blonde curls volumized to the max, adding another few inches to his towering posture.

His make-up was also flawless, included a deep red on his full lips, gold eye shadow to bring out his dress, and dark mascara on what were surely fake eyelashes.

His only accessories were large gold hoop earrings, and a tiny golden clutch purse, made look even more minuscule in his shovel-like hands.

It wasn't immediately clear why the star had decided to switch genders for the night.

It may have been a nod to his co-star Joshua Grannell - AKA Peaches Christ - the local drag performer who plays a transvestite in the film.

It's not Skarsgard's first foray into drag either - he played the '6 foot transvestite' Geert in the 2006 Swedish film Kill Your Darlings.

In Diary Of A Teenage Girl, he plays the 35-year-old boyfriend of Kirstin Wiig's character, who has an affair with her titular 15-year-old daughter, played by Bel Powley.

The film won the Grand Prix of Generation 14plus section - for films with themes centered on teens or older youths - for best feature length film at this year's Berlin Film Festival.

It goes on general release in the US and UK on Friday.
