Gwyneth Paltrow on her most talked-about Goop moments: How THAT Conscious Uncoupling post came about and why she stands by vaginal steaming endorsement

It's one of the most mocked posts on Gwyneth Paltrow's notoriously controversial lifestyle website, Goop.

However, in the September issue of Fast Company the 42-year-old says it wasn't even her idea to use the term 'Conscious Uncoupling' in her marriage split announcement.

She and Coldplay singer Chris Martin were derided for using the phrase when they announced they were separating after nine years of marriage in 2014 but the 'Iron Man 3' star has now admitted the headline on her Goop website posting had nothing to do with her.

'When I announced that I was separating on the website, [Editorial Director] Elise Loehnen titled the piece Conscious Uncoupling and I had no idea,' she revealed.

(Of course, accompanying statement by the couple did include the term. It read in part: 'We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner. Love, Gwyneth & Chris.')

Of the ensuing reaction and ridicule, the star added: 'When something like that happens, I think everybody is like, 'Oh, s***.' I just tell them that I think we are creating interesting discussions.'

Gwyneth and her team were also slammed for publishing a piece on vaginal-steaming and the actress once again defended her editorial director.

She said: 'This is a thousands-of-years-old practice in Korean spas,' with Elise adding: 'It feels good, it's not harmful, it's not like we're urging people to go out and buy AK-47s.'

While Gwyneth's mother Blythe Danner is proud of her daughter and Chris for how they handled the split, she has admitted in the past that even she struggled to understand the phrase they used.

She said: 'People make fun of this, um, what do they call it? What is that thing that they've been doing? Separating, but being?'

When reminded it was 'conscious uncoupling', she added: 'Yes, but it's called 'conscious' . . . not 'conscious uncoupling.' Conscious...''

And Gwyneth doesn't mind the drama, noting: 'I always like it when there’s a big response to something because it tells me, ‘Oh we’ve touched a nerve here, this is really interesting.''

'There are a lot of media companies that would die to have the kind of response that we get from our content.'

Goop’s CEO, Lisa Gersh - previously CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia - added: 'Love us or hate us, you want to know what we think.'

But while the star is confident in her growing business now, she admitted nerves thinking back on the small writing project it began as, with her sending subscribers a weekly newsletter with a bit of advice.

'When I think back on it, I’m afraid to press send,' Gwyneth said. 'But at the time, I had this belief in what I was going to do.'

She looked back on her movie career in much the same way, sharing: 'My future self is always afraid when I look back.'

Lace up your look with Gwyneth's Paul Andrew wedges

There's just something about Gwyneth.

Dewy glow and age-defying body aside, we can't help but notice that the actress has this innate knack for looking polished in the most casual, just-threw-it-on kinda way. Take this ensemble, for example.

We're loving the summery floral print gown, but it's Gwynnie's off-beat choice of footwear that really elevates this look to dizzying heights!

Who would think to pair raffia lace-up wedges with a floral dress?! Not us! But it works so, so well. Gwyneth's pick are by Paul Andrew and we're loving the hues of taupe and sand plus that effortless lace-up detail.

Styled with skinnies and a peasant blouse, or peeking out from under a maxi dress a la Gwynnie, these (now reduced!) sandals will be your best summer buy yet!

'I had this the other day where somebody was asking me about [the movie Emma], that I did in England when I was 22. It was really my first starring role, an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma.'

She continued: 'And I remember at the time people saying, ‘Weren’t you intimidated to play this English heroine? You’re this American girl.’ When I think about it [now], I would be petrified.''

Speaking of her movie career, with the busy star having spent a chunk of her time in the past year on her 'main job' developing Goop and fostering business relations as it continues to grow, she insisted she has not lost her passion for film.

'I’m a big believer in the ampersand,' she said. 'I don’t see it as I’m leaving something behind, I see it as this year I probably won’t make a movie or I probably won’t do a TV show or a play, and I’ll focus on the business.'

The mother-of-two continued: 'It’s our tendency to want to put women in one little category. That’s where we like them.'
