Sarah Silverman has never been afraid to express herself, and that definitely seemed to be the case when she was spotted in New York City on Monday.

The 44-year-old actress and comedian took a walk around the city's Soho neighbourhood while wearing a peasant-style dress made of fabrics in multiple patterns.

With her eyes covered by round sunglasses and earbuds playing music for her stroll, Sarah looked far too cool to care what anyone thought about her clothes.

Boho chic: Sarah Silverman wore a peasant-style maxi-dress while walking in the Soho neighbourhood of New York City on Monday

Black hair swept up into a bun atop her head, Sarah's pale skin seemed unenhanced by makeup.

Her frock was an ankle-length sundress with spaghetti straps - it had been put together out of pieces of patterned fabric.

Those fabrics did not particularly match, but the overall effect of the dress was artsy enough to make it work.

Mismatch magic: Although the prints that made up the dress clashed somewhat, the overall effect worked

Baggage: Unnecessary on the warm day, Sarah also draped a black-and-white sweater over her shoulders, held in place by a black backpack

For shoes, Sarah opted for sensible brown-and-white trainers with pink laces.

In case the temperature dropped, Sarah also had a black-and-white-striped sweater that she had hung over her shoulders, held in place by the straps of a backpack.

Although the Jesus Is Magic comedian did not wear any jewellery, a pair of spare glasses hung on a chain around Sarah's neck compensated for that.

The oft-controversial Sarah found herself in the news again last week after anti-abortion group Live Action compared her to a Nazi for defending Planned Parenthood.

Sarah posted on Twitter on July 27: 'Abortion is still legal in the great U.S of A. It would be insane not to use fetal tissue 4 science & education in such cases. #StandwithPP'

Live Action - which recently posted undercover videos edited to make it look like Planned Parenthood doctors were selling fetal tissue for profit - responded that 'the Nazis really did use the same logic' as Sarah.

Controversy: Last week, Sarah was compared to Nazis after she tweeted support for Planned Parenthood

On a lighter note, Sarah's boyfriend, actor Michael Sheen, 46, revealed last week that they had been rather disappointed by the outcome of the latest season of The Bachelorette.

'I don't want to be negative about anyone, but things didn't go the way we were hoping,' Michael told Us Weekly, referring to Caitlyn Bristowe's choice of Shawn Booth.

He also indicated that 'Tony the healer' was the best choice for the next Bachelor.

Sarah and Michael have been dating since January 2014, while the Emmy-winning actress previously was paired with Jimmy Kimmel, Alex Sulkin, and Kyle Dunnigan.

Not her choice: A few days later, Sarah's boyfriend - actor Michael Sheen - revealed that he and the 44-year-old comedian were Bachelorette fans who thought Caitlyn Bristowe should have made a different choice
