Liam Payne cuts a casual figure as he enjoys a dinner date with girlfriend Sophia Smith in New York

One Direction celebrated their first single release without Zayn Malik at the weekend but Liam Payne took time out from boy-band duties to enjoy a date night with his girlfriend Sophia Smith on Monday.

Liam, 21, cut a casual figure in a mostly all-black outfit which comprised jeans and a plain T-shirt when he was spotted striding through Midtown Manhattan accompanied by a member of his security team.

The 1D singer looked like a man on a mission when he was pictured without Sophia - who was waiting for him in the taxi - after having dined at Quality Meats.

Liam, 21, seemed to be in a relaxed mood and was pictured fist-bumping one pap as he made his way to the taxi.

He also took the time to pose with a female fan before joining Sophia in the cab.

While Liam enjoyed a low-key outing, band mate Niall Horan was pictured leaving Soho House in the early hours.

Liam's outing comes as the four-piece former X Factor band adjust to life without Zayn Malik.

Louis Tomlinson sang the lads' praises during a radio interview on Monday.

Speaking to Darryl Morris on Manchester radio station Key 103, Louis credited their ability to adjust though admitted it was all a little odd to begin with.

'Don’t get me wrong it was a different dynamic at first and I think that’s just another challenge and another adjustment that we’ve had to make,' he said amid the release of Drag Me Down, the group's first single as a quartet.

'I think we’ve done that and I think we’ve proved that with this single. We always made a habit of sharing out the vocals anyway so we just said to ourselves we’ve got to make this work and I think we did,' the Midnight Memories singer added.

Chatting to Capital Breakfast's Lisa Snowdon and Dave Berry the same day, the singer denied their new single was a dig at former member, Zayn.

When the duo joked that the track was about Zayn no longer dragging them down following his departure, the father-to-be wasn't having any of it.

'Are you trying to look for some kind of controversial answer here? You're not getting it. The song is not about that, obviously,' Louis responded.

But despite their latest leap without him, Zayn proved there is no bad blood between himself and the group and praised their new track on Twitter on Saturday.

'Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. :) x,' he wrote.

The 22-year-old has plenty to smile about after signing a music deal with RCA Records, with whom he will launch his highly-anticipated solo career.

'I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who i really am! #realmusic #RCA !! (sic),' the star tweeted shortly after penning his name on the dotted line.
