'I wanted revenge': Jerry Hall admits she embarked on an affair to punish Mick Jagger for cheating on her

She has always found herself classed as the long-suffering wife who fought a losing battle to transform Mick Jagger into a one-woman man.

Now Jerry Hall has revealed to Radio Times that she embarked on an affair of her own with wealthy horse breeder Robert Sangster in order to give the Rolling Stones star a taste of his own medicine.

Although her retaliation initially worked, in the end she was forced to realise Jagger would never change.

Commenting on his philandering and the incessant lies he told her, Jerry is asked if she ever sought revenge at which point she re-opens the story of her dalliance: 'I did [want revenge]. At one point I went off and had an affair with somebody else. Robert Sangster. So lovely. Horse breeder. Then Mick would beg me back.'

She admits the fling, which she claims only lasted a couple of weeks made her feel good; empowered, and was the only one during her 23 year relationship with him: 'The only big time. I thought Mick would eventually change, but he didn't,' she said.

Miss Hall's 1982 affair with Sangster who passed away aged 67 from cancer in 2004, was well-publicised and one she is reported to have described as a 'disaster'.

However her latest interview with the Radio Times is believed to be the first time she has admitted she was motivated by a desire to seek revenge.

She added: 'He [Jagger] never annoyed me. Not little things. I mean his actions with other women were pretty bad but that was the only thing that annoyed me. Not little things. I mean his actions with other women were pretty bad but that was the only thing that annoyed me. He didn't annoy me day-to-day.

'He denied everything [the affairs] to the end.'

Speaking to promote her upcoming episode in BBC series Who Do You Think You Are? Jerry discovers she is 'actually English on both sides of my family' – her father's family were Oldham mill workers while her mother's moved from England to become pioneers in the United States living in Kentucky.

Her relationship with Sangster started when she found out Jagger, now 72, was cheating on her with Italian model Carla Bruni.

She had intercepted a fax from Miss Bruni to Jagger which read 'Let's spend the night together' and was naturally furious.

She went off travelling with Sangster, who was married to Susan Sangster at the time, in an apparent attempt to make her man jealous.

Her plan worked. Within a year Jagger and Jerry, soon pregnant with their first child, Elizabeth, were back together.

She remained uneasy about her unmarried status and appeared in the gossip columns because of her public flirtations with Lord Neidpath and Count Adam Zamoyski in 1988.

Jerry eventually went through a Hindu marriage ceremony with Jagger on the Indonesian island of Bali, but it emerged later that it was not legal.

The pair, who have four children from their union: Elizabeth, 31, James, 29, Georgia May, 23, and Gabriel, 17, eventually split for good in 1999 after Jerry, now 59, discovered Jagger was expecting a lovechild with former fashion model Luciana Morad, 45.

She has long believed she was emotionally scarred by her childhood where her abusive father, Sergeant John Hall, was allowed to rule and elaborates upon this during her Radio Times interview.

Asked if he was violent towards her, she said: 'yes, he would blow his top. We were very careful to steer clear. But my mother loved him and stayed with him to the end. He was quite scary.'

She pauses. 'He was quite scary,' she repeats quietly. 'He was violent to whoever happened to be in the way at the time he blew his top. A whack here, or whatever. Yeah he was pretty bad.'

Jerry's father fought with General George Patton's men in Europe and returned from the Second World War a hero with a bronze star medal, having helped liberate a death camp in Poland. But he was traumatised by what he had seen, unrecognisable from the man who had gone to war. Miss Hall said her father 'had nightmares, gambled away our farm, and was violent.'

These days, she said, soldiers with his condition would be treated for post-traumatic stress, but back then there was nothing for them. They were supposed to bury their demons and get on with life.

A hugely successful cover girl and catwalk star who at one point earned $1,000 a day, Miss Hall is the first to admit 'Beauty makes life easier. People want to do things for you. They want to marry you and pay for everything.'

And she states she has no fear of turning 60 urging more women to embrace their mature years.

Jerry who is single following her split from scientist boyfriend Armand Leroi, said: 'So many women are being weak about ageing. I find it annoying. It's ridiculous to imagine you can stay young for ever and live for ever. It's taking away from young people. There's a beauty and a respect in age.'
