Niall Horan parties in NYC just hours before One Direction are due to perform new single for the first time on television

One Direction were set to perform their new single Drag Me Down on Good Morning America bright and early on Tuesday morning.

But that didn't stop singer Niall Horan from enjoying a night out in New York City the night before its big TV debut.

The 21-year-old was spotted leaving Soho House members' club in Manhattan's Meatpacking District on Monday evening flanked by security.

The Night Changes singer looked cute in a blue plaid shirt which he teamed with ripped skinny jeans and blonde leather ankle boots as he was ushered into a waiting car.

And while Niall was making the most of his fleeting stop-off in the Big Apple Liam Payne enjoyed a low key date night with his girlfriend Sophia Smith across town.

Liam's romantic evening out comes after he revealed that even he couldn't have predicted Louis Tomlinson's recent baby bombshell.

The 21-year-old 1D star says he was just as shocked as everyone else when he discovered that Louis and his stylist friend Briana Jungwirth, both 23, were expecting a child together.

Speaking to Magic Radio’s Jo Parkerson, he explained: 'Obviously I was a bit shocked but he's taken super well to it.

'He's very excited with what's going on with him at the moment and I feel that stuff like that happens sometimes… he's taking it very seriously,' he continued.

Quizzed on what he thought of the pretty mum-to-be, the singer replied: 'Yeah she's really nice, she's a lovely girl.'

Liam's comments come after One Direction's new single Drag Me Down shot to number one after its surprise release on Friday.

The single, which follows November 2014's Night Changes (the last single before Zayn Malik's departure in March 2015), broke the record for the greatest number of streams over one day (over 4.75m), smashing the record previously set by Wiz Khalifa with See You Again (feat.Charlie Puth).

Probed on whether he would ever follow in Zayn's footsteps and pursue a solo career of his own, Liam revealed that he was more interested in the work that goes on behind-the-scenes rather than taking centre stage.

He said: 'I'm more interested in the writing side of things if I'm honest.

'I like writing songs for different artists and crafting a song is a really beautiful thing to do, I sit down and do it with my girlfriend sometimes and with a couple of lads that I know. I much prefer doing that sort of thing.

'I love being in the band. I don't know if I could do it by myself now, it's all too comfortable,' he added.

Drag Me Down dropped just two days after Zayn announced he had signed a record deal with RCA Records.

After sharing a photo of himself signing his new deal, Zayn tweeted: 'I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who I really am! #realmusic #RCA !! ... #REALME (sic).'

Asked what he thought his longtime pal had meant by the apparent '#realmusic' and '#REALME' dig, Liam responded: 'I don't think he meant it that way…at least I hope he didn't mean it that way.'

Zayn did, however, congratulate the boys on their new offering and tweeted on Friday: 'Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. :) x'

And while the group are not in constant contact with Zayn, Liam insisted he understands why he left One Direction and thinks he made the right decision.

He said: 'I haven't spoken to him recently and he's off doing his own thing and taking his time..... it is a difficult thing to leave the band.... but his heart wasn't in it and you have to go with your heart and say I can't do this anymore and there is something out there that I do want to do that is different...and that's fine.

'I'm dead excited to hear some of his stuff, I did a lot of work with him in the studio when he was in the band. We used to stay up late and do rap stuff which is quite interesting... because I like to produce rap beats and stuff. He's got a great voice and he's a very talented young man and we wish him all the best of luck.'
