Keep them to yourselfie! Kim Kardashian's selfie book, Selfish, sells just 32,000 copies in three months - despite the reality star boasting 41.4 million Instagram followers

  • The reality star is the second most popular celebrity on Instagram, but few of her followers seem to have turned out to support her publication
  • The book of self-snapped portraits was released in May
  • Despite the flagging sales, Selfish has already outsold Kris Jenner's cookbook, and Kendall and Kylie's debut fiction novel

With 41.4 million followers, Kim Kardashian is the second most popular celebrity on Instagram, after Beyoncé.

But fans who've been happy to see her selfies for free haven't been so quick to shell out $9.97 for the privilege to flip through her self-portraits in book form. Radar reports that her photo book, Selfish, as sold a paltry 32,000 copies since it was released three months ago on May 5.

While the coffee table book is a #1 bestseller in the very niche category of 'celebrity photography' on Amazon - beating out publications by Dita Von Teese and Derek Jeter - it's ranked at only 2,075 in books overall by the online retailer.

The flagging sales may have come as a surprise to Kim however, particularly after 500 limited edition copies of her book, which were sold on Gilt.com for $60 each in April, sold out in just one minute.

While Kim's book wasn't officially available until May, the website offered fans a special pre-sale of the limited edition copies which, in addition to bearing the selfie queen's signature, also came complete with a special cover featuring a bikini-clad image of the star.

But it seems the excitement surrounding the limited release of books didn't carry over to the official product itself.

Even with such subpar sales however, Kim's vanity project has actually sold better than other books produced by members of her family.

Five months after its June 2014 release, Kendall and Kyle Jenner's fiction endeavor - Rebels: City of Indra: The Story of Lex and Livia - had sold just 13,000 units.

Successful sister: In three months, Kim's book has sold two and a half times as many copies as Kendall and Kylie Jenner's fiction novel, Rebels: City of Indra: The Story of Lex and Livia, did in five months

And Kim's mom, Kris Jenner, fared even worse. Her cookbook, In the Kitchen with Kris: A Kollection of Kardashian-Jenner Family Favorites, ranked at 5,184 in books on Amazon just days after its release last October.

And if that small set of devoted fans who bought a copy of Selfish were satisfied with their purchase, they aren't making it known on Amazon.

Reviews for the 448-page book are unflattering, with several people who actually bought it sharing complaints about its quality and content.

'If I could give it 0 rating I would,' said one one-star reviewer who posted pictures of her purchase. 'This book seems like it was made with absolutely no thought, consideration, just for money!

'You can't even see the pictures clearly because it's cut right down the middle & because of the tiny hard book with thick pages it's not easily bendable. Why did they make the book so tiny?! This was a WASTE of MY money! Don't waste yours, this is garbage! [sic]'

Others complained that the pictures were unoriginal and had appeared elsewhere before.

They had been hoping that, for the money spent, they would own copies of pictures that hadn't already been shared on Kim's Instagram page.

Still, some people did give the book a five-star review - including one person who said she purchased it as a gag gift and it served its purpose perfectly.

However, many of the one-star reviews are clearly from non-customers, like this one from a person who gave it one star: 'It's a little uncomfortable but doesn't leave pieces behind when you go to wipe like other brands like Charmin and generic brand toilet paper.'
