EXCLUSIVE: Yours for only $60 million – pictures of  the sprawling Majorca estate being sold by Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones and his ex-wife (but even at that price it needs a bit of work)

  • The 250-acre estate on the sun-kissed Spanish island of Majorca is up for sale even though it's Michael's 'spiritual home'
  • Douglas once tended the vineyards himself and he liked nothing better than to putter in the vegetable patch of tomatoes, squash and olive trees
  • Now the property is left empty and showing tiny signs of decay and disrepair - broken tiles, bricks and charred wood haven't been cleared
  • Michael and ex-wife Diandra bought the property in 1989 for $3.5 million and spent a further $7 million on renovations
  • Before he married Catherine, Douglas partied with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson in Majorca
  • The estate has a home cinema, wine cellar, outdoor pool, games room, library and an outdoor kitchen

With spectacular blue sea views, this is Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones's majestic Spanish vacation home which could be yours - for a cool $60 million.

The luxury 250-acre estate on the sun-kissed Spanish island of Majorca was put up for sale despite the fact it is said to be Michael's 'spiritual home'.

But six months on, the place has no buyer and is lying empty.

The sprawling property is co-owned by Michael and his ex-wife Diandra in a bizarre and awkward timeshare pact. And for that reason at least, it is low on Catherine Zeta Jones' list of preferred vacation spots.

Consequently the Welsh beauty has almost never been seen at the house since the couple tied the knot in 2000 and the decision to sell it may well be a sign she is firmly back in the driving seat of their tumultuous 15-year marriage.

They own over $100 million in real estate all over the world, and she's even admitted that they pick up houses like others collect art.

But, unlike their places in Bermuda and her home town of Swansea, the Majorca property holds no particular attraction for Catherine and the estate has now been pretty much left to rot since it was placed on the market in December by luxury realtor Sotheby's International.

In our exclusive pictures, the only signs of life on the coastal estate are dedicated staff tending to the vineyards and donkeys eating the wild grass.

The shutters on the windows are firmly closed and neighbors say they haven't seen the residents for months and only on the odd occasion in the last five years.

In the past, the stunning Spanish retreat has played host to the likes of Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson.

Locals conjecture that the sale is a sign just how strong the Douglas marriage is that Catherine has managed to persuade her husband to put the place on the market.

But also the 70-year-old Douglas's health has been an issue since he's still in remission from his  throat cancer  ordeal in 2010.

The death last month of his mother Diana, long divorced from his 98-year-old dad Kirk Douglas, has meant Michael and Catherine have been spending more time at their homes on this side of the Atlantic.

The couple have an apartment in Manhattan, a summer home in Bedford, New York, and a ranch in Bermuda - his mother's country of birth - which Catherine has made no secret is her favorite.

Long-time Majorca resident Shirley Roberts,  tells Daily Mail Online: 'I think some of this is to do with mortality and he has his own brushes with ill health, his mother dying, and his relationship with Diandra being what it is, it's probably the last place that Catherine wants to go to, so it seems inevitable they'd sell it, although that's all speculation.'

Michael wasn't always such an absent player in Majorca.

When he first bought the sprawling property in Valldemossa, Majorca, in 1989 with his then wife Diandra, he was enchanted with the history of the estate, which is known locally as S'Etaca and belonged to Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austra in the 19th century.

He'd tend to the vineyards himself, which produced fine wines, and he liked nothing better than to putter in the vegetable patch of tomatoes, squash, olive and almond trees.

They'd spend at least six months of the year in Majorca and entertain their celebrity friends in one of the seven guest cottages.

Ever since his separation from Diandra, 59, in 2000, they shared the house between them - Douglas and his wife Catherine would have it from January to June, Diandra from July to December.

At Michael and Diandra's  insistence, all the furniture and fittings will not be sold with the property, including even the tiniest of things like crockery, paintings and rugs.

Seven months ago, a tetchy truce between them finally snapped and the house was put on the market for $60 million, which is a tidy profit for Michael and Diandra who bought it for just $3.5 million and spent a further $7 million on renovations.

Since then, the property has been vacated and marketed by Sotheby's International as 'ready to move in.'

Now the stunning property with such a deep history is left empty and showing tiny signs of decay - broken tiles and bricks left on the grounds and old burned wood hasn't been cleared.

The only time Catherine has visited publicly was June of last year when Michael posted pictures on his Facebook page of himself tending to his vegetable patch, looking out to sea and various other poses, which he said were photographed by his wife.

Michael and Diandra had such an affinity to the community. Diandra was born and brought up in the region and her mother lived close by.

Michael became so heavily involved in the Valldemossa community that he bought the Costa Nord cultural centre and, even after he sold it over a decade ago, he still let them use his image and name to promote the island.

But Costa Nord is feeling the effects of his absence. Investment in the local area has dropped and Costa Nord has had to close its doors after, for so many years, being the crown jewel of the town.

Resident Roberts says: 'Michael Douglas  used to be very visible, Costa Nord was his legacy, it was used as a fantastic cultural centre.

'Michael would see this area as his spiritual home, his father Kirk had been a big fan, he had a natural affinity to the whole of Deia [the local district], it became a mecca for Americans in the Fifties - writers, artists, actors, creative types. It was a very hedonistic free spirited area. When Michael and his dad came, then all sorts turned up, Hollywood stars came to the area.'

But, since his marriage to Catherine, his love affair with S'Etaca has slowly crumbled away. Speak to local people in Valldemossa - which Michael has done so much for in the past - and they say they've never even seen the 45-year-old actress in town.

When a local Spanish newspaper interviewed Diandra regarding rumors that she was selling her half to Catherine, she spitefully retorted: 'It's not true. Sometimes people say things without the slightest proof. Why would someone who doesn't speak Spanish or the local Majorcan language or knows nothing about this culture want a house here? She doesn't even come here much.'

Zeta Jones has always preferred Bermuda out of all their holiday homes around the globe, which also includes Quebec and Aspen.

When they built a new home in 2002 near Swansea in Wales, average house prices in the seaside village rocketed almost 90 percent.

Catherine once said: 'Like people collect art, we collect homes. We love architecture. It's like a passion.

She says that their hideaway in Bermuda is the only spot she can find privacy, adding: 'That's one of the great things about living in Bermuda, where we now spend most of our time.

'It's just easy and removed. And it's a great place to bring up kids. You should see me taking them to school with my baseball cap on - but why am I hiding? Nobody's going to recognize me, anyway!'

Zeta jones - who won Best Supporting Actress Academy Award winner for her role as showgirl Velma Kelly in Chicago - has struggled with bipolar disorder and troubles in her private life, which hit the headlines when the pair temporarily separated in 2013 with Michael Douglas living in a a separate Manhattan apartment.

Even though S'Estaca was more secluded than any of their other homes - the property is in one of the most rugged and private spots in Spain and difficult enough to get to by foot let alone car - it never felt like home to Catherine and the shadow of Diandra was always overhanging, sources say.

'You had the problems with Diandra, the house became a bone of contention, but they weren't going to give it to each other. No matter what though, we'd always see him around,' says Shirley.

One restaurant owner said that he'd served Michael dinner in February while another hotelier was bemoaning the fact that Michael's departure from the island came from several clashes with the local council. In 2002, he was fined nearly $3 million for illegally extending his property and the council threatened to demolish the work. He was only let off the fine when he agreed to help promote the island.

'We used to see him all the time, now we don't. I blame the local authorities, they always make life so hard for the celebrities. Whenever they want to do something different to their properties or want extensions, then it gets turned downed,' he said.

'It was the reason why Richard Branson left the island. He bought La Residencia, in Deia, then he tried to make it bigger, but the council put a stop to it, so he left the island. They don't like celebrities here trying to show off their power. They'll put a stop to it.'
