Separation anxiety, a long engagement and cheating rumours: Experts reveal what went wrong for Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards (and why she should NEVER take him back)

  • FEMAIL called on experts to share views on showbiz break-up
  • They say living together without a wedding date set is risky
  • The absolute maximum amount of time for an engagement is one year

Former One Direction star Zayn Malik called off his engagement to Little Mix beauty Perrie Edwards, sending shockwaves through the showbiz world.

Cheating rumours, jet-set schedules and the increased pressure since Zayn's departure from his chart-topping band in March have blighted the romance that started backstage at The X Factor four years ago.

So how and why did it all go wrong for Tinseltown's cutest couple, who got engaged in 2013? FEMAIL called on India Kang, Dating and Relationship Coach for Women, and eHarmony.co.uk expert Jemima Wade, to share their expert views on why they think things didn't work out.

No set wedding date

Ordinarily living together without an engagement ring or a wedding date set is risky. When a girl agrees to live with him without any commitment it kills the chase, the challenge and the mystery.

It’s always better if she gives less and leaves him wanting more. There is a saying 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free'. I advise all girls never to cohabite unless there’s a ring on your finger and a wedding date set. Living together without a ring is best avoided. What’s the rush? Once married, you will be living together for a very long time anyway.

Long engagement

A long engagement is never a good idea. The absolute maximum amount of time for an engagement is one year. As this example proves, an engagement and cohabitation is no guarantee of marriage.

If they did want a long engagement, Perrie should never have agreed to cohabite. Now they have the added stress and trauma of selling up, splitting any assets and moving out.

Cheating rumours

One cheat and it’s pretty much over. If you think your guy has cheated, it’s best if you return the engagement ring and start over. If he can cheat now, he can cheat again and its better you know sooner rather than later. We don’t know if Zayn actually cheated, he has been dogged by infidelity rumours. If he did cheat Perrie should have ended things months ago!

Career focus

It can be tough to make relationships work when you combine being as career-driven as Zayn and Perrie, with being frequently far apart. The majority of uncertainty in a long-distance relationship comes from having intense feelings of intimacy and connection followed by equally intense feelings of having to stand on your own. This kind of separation anxiety can come with local relationships, too, it’s just tends to amplified with LDRs.

What can Perrie do now?

Perrie is actually doing the right thing. She is putting on a brave face and continuing with her promotional duties. This is the best remedy. Keep busy and start dating ASAP

This split doesn’t sound new. Perrie was seen without her engagement ring earlier this year, at the time she said it was at the cleaners. I had my wedding ring cleaned and it only took a couple of hours. It sounds like they may have broken up and got back together; hence even though the split feels sudden, it probably wasn’t.

Perrie should carry on working and keep a dignified silence, for example, don’t plaster her heartbreak on social media. No doubt she is hurting, it’s best she talks privately with her trusted friends and family

Should she take him back?

Never ever should she take him back. Once a guy breaks up with you, it’s over! If he broke up with her once, he can break up with her again or worse, leave her standing at the altar. Perrie should try her best to move on.
