Solo Sean Penn looks downcast as he goes to dinner post-split with Charlize Theron

He has never been one to crack a smile but the actor set a new standard for looking somber.

Now without his beautiful plus one, Sean Penn appeared far from happy as he headed to dinner in Beverly Hills, California.

The 54-year-old seemed downcast as he walked into celebrity-loved eatery on Tuesday evening.

While a photographer at the scene said the star had a bite to eat with a mystery woman, he certainly cut a very solitary figure walking in.

Perhaps with the weight of his split with Charlize Theron on his shoulders, the Dead Man Walking star kept his head bowed as he walked into the Italian restaurant.

The iconic star certainly did not dress in a way that even had a chance of lightening his mood, with the actor stepping out in a colour palette akin to a grey old wet day.

No spring in his step: Perhaps with the weight of his split with Charlize Theron on his shoulders, the Dead Man Walking star kept his head bowed as he walked into the Italian restaurant without showing his usual anger towards waiting photographers

For his dinner, the actor turned director - he directed his now ex-fiancee in their latest movie The Last Face - wore a pair of dark grey pants, a light grey shirt under a brown leather jacket and a pair of scuffed up suede Western boots.

Sean has been single for just two months after he and Charlize called off their engagement.

The pair have been friends for two decades but got romantically involved during the filming of The Last Face.

Can't escape: Last week, the 54-year-old came face-to-face with his ex-fiancee in South Africa, as he had to direct her in re-shoots for their film The Last Face - the movie which saw their friendship turn romantic in the first place

But while they have been able to get out of each other's love lives, the pair have been unable to get out of each other's lives completely, as just last week they needed to be together again to film re-shoots for the movie.

And that certainly did not look like a stress free occasion.

Despite their split being new, already there have been some big changes in the Oscar winner's life, life with the star, who turns 40 on Friday, reportedly just adopting a little girl August.

August is the second child from Charlize who adopted son Jackson in 2012.

The ex files: If they did not split, the Oscar winner would have been heading down the aisle for the third time having been married to Robin Wright (pictured 2008) from 1996 to 2010 and Madonna for four years until 1989
