No holding back! One Direction perform new record breaking single Drag Me Down on television for the first time

They may be a little lighter on members these days, but the only direction these guys seem to be going is up.

One Direction took to the Good Morning America stage in New York on Tuesday morning in front of thousands of screaming fans.

The now four-piece belted out their new hit, Drag Me Down, on television for the first time proving they are still a force to be reckoned with.

The sound was deafening as Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson walked on to the stage for the special concert.

Drag Me Down is the band's first single without former member Zayn Malik and is setting their pace as a four-piece with it setting a new Spotify record with more than 4.75 million streams in one day.

1D have only played the single one other time, namely on Friday at their Indianapolis, Indiana, concert.

Careful there: The 21-year-old really gave the performance his all throwing himself around stage, at times so violently and awkwardly that he looked like he would fall

Looking like the cohesive unit the group has become known for, the boys also impressed with tracks Steal My Girl and Story Of My Life - which somehow managed to be heard above the squealing girls.

While the performance was meant to be all about the new record setting single, the break out star of the day was Harry's facial expressions.

The heartthrob pulled a myriad of very unusual facial poses through the song, which saw him contort his muscles in such a way that he was lucky the wind did not change as he would have quickly lost his pretty boy status.

Looking good: Harry was stylish in a pair of tight black jeans, black T-shirt and a Seventies-inspired silk jacket with tigers on it

The 21-year-old really gave the performance his all throwing himself around stage, at times so violently and awkwardly that he looked like he would fall.

If he had, he at least would have looked good doing it as Harry was stylish in a pair of tight black jeans, black T-shirt and a Seventies-inspired silk jacket with tigers on it.

Harry's antics did not seem to worry his other band members especially Liam, who did his best to sing around the star.

Casually cool: Liam went for a lumbersexual hipster look wearing a pair of looser fit black jeans with rips on the knees and a blue flannel shirt

While those two clowned around on one side of the stage, Niall showed off his musical chops by both singing and playing the guitar.

The 21-year-old stuck to his usual style for the performance wearing a red and grey plaid short sleeve shirt with black trousers and his blonde hair spiked up.

Clearly gel is a valuable commodity in the ID dressing room as Louis also went for a pompadour look complete with curl.

The 23-year-old dressed a bit more simply than his band mates wearing tight black jeans with just a T-shirt featuring a blue print.

Tuesday was a big day for Louis as a hit single is not the only new thing in his life.

The star broke his silence about becoming a dad on the show - he is expecting his first child with stylist Briana Jungwirth, the pair are not together.

Host Michael Strahan got him talking after asking: 'Louis, from one father to another I want to congratulate you on your upcoming fatherhood. So how are you feeling?'

Louis replied with a smile: 'Thank you. Obviously it's a very exciting time, so I'm buzzing.'

Really? While that was exciting to the band, they seemed a little less impressed with Raven-Symone

The View host came on stage wearing a bizarre silver visor over her face.

The foursome were also asked about how it feels to perform without Zayn, who left in March.

Speaking for all the singers, Liam said: 'Obviously it's different, but it's still going great, and that's what this album is about.'

Liam was of course talking about the band's hotly anticipated fifth album, which is almost ready for release.

The band are making finishing touches to the LP while they continue their North American tour.
