Speaking during an interview with Free radio, Liam explained: 'You know, I think everyone needs a little bit of a break now, and a sit down and a stop, to kind of take in all the great things that've happened.'

Shortly after Zayn Malik's shock departure from the group in March, Liam had insisted that the group would not be taking time out 'for a while'.

He told BANG Showbiz: 'We won't be going anywhere for a while, so I don't know where that's brewed from.'

The Steal My Girl hitmaker - who is dating his childhood friend Sophia Smith - also admitted that he wants to write music for other artists and spend some time back at home.

Asked what he wants to do during their time off, he said: 'There's loads of things. I've been writing a lot on the road at the moment, not for me, just for other people.

'I've been doing a lot of things, you know trying to get into the producing side of it which is pretty cool.'

Nevertheless, the group - who premiered the first single 'Drag Me Down' from their fifth studio album last week - are excited for the release of their next LP, which they have only recently completed work on.

One Direction took to the Good Morning America stage in New York on Tuesday morning in front of thousands of screaming fans to perform their new hit on television for the first time.

Drag Me Down is the band's first single without former member Zayn Malik and is setting their pace as a four-piece with it setting a new Spotify record with more than 4.75 million streams in one day.

The band are making finishing touches to the LP while they continue their North American tour.

Meanwhile, ex-1D member Zayn recently caused a stir when he signed a brand new contract with RCA Records, despite having left the group in March to be a 'normal 22-year-old' and focus on his relationship with Perrie Edwards.

And he has hit the headlines once again, after calling off his engagement with the Little Mix star, his actions at odds with his claims made earlier this year when he sensationally quit the group.

The news was revealed on Tuesday that the pop star lovebirds' four-year relationship had come to an end, at the same time as the hitmaking former X Factor group debuted their brand new track.

A new start: Zayn revealed last week that he had signed a record deal with RCA Records, despite previously saying he had left One Direction to be a 'normal 22-year-old'
