Rose McGowan protects her porcelain skin with wide hat while shopping in New York

Rose McGowan was spotted rocking a casual look in New York City on Monday.

The actress, 41, wore a leather bum bag, ripped jean shorts and a wide-brimmed hat which afforded her some protection from the UV rays.

The former Charmed star stayed comfortable in cute blue high-topped sneakers as she went shopping at camera store B&H in Manhattan.

The actress's dark brown pixie cut was tucked under her large hat, and a pair of quirky orange sunglasses shielded her eyes from the sun.

The Scream star paired her distressed jean shorts with a white sleeveless top, and appeared serious and make-up free as she strolled down the street.

It's no surprise McGowan was shopping at the iconic camera and video store, since she has reinvented herself as a director and admitted she may never act again.

McGowan recently stepped behind the camera to make her short film Dawn, which screened at the 2014 Sundance Festival, before being revealed to the world via YouTube in June.

The creepy thriller, set in the 1960s, is about a naive teenager who invites her crush into her sheltered world, has earned McGowan praise for her film-making skills.

And it seems it's just the start for the newly minted director, who told IndieWire she sees her future in the director's chair, not in front of the camera.

'I don't really want to do it anymore,' she said of acting.  'If something amazing came my way I might.'

'But there's literally no urge to get in front of the camera. And that's the thing, I would go to movies and I wouldn't say to myself, 'God I wish I had that part.'

Instead I'd say, 'God, I wish I could've directed that!' or 'God, I wish I had that script!' she told the magazine.

The actress-director has also been outspoken about sexism in the film industry.

In June, she said she was fired by her agent for Tweeting details of a cringe-worthy casting note for an audition for an Adam Sandler movie which suggested actresses wear push-up bras to the audition. It also helpfully reminded women to read the script before showing up.
