'Spiderman of mobile cases' defies gravity to sit on table edges, stick to windows and turn your phone into a hands-free mirror

  • The ExtraVerso mobile phone case clings to pretty much anything for hours, days, months, and even years, so its makers claim
  • Special resin reproduces the effect of thousands of mini-suction cups
  • Indiegogo campaign needs to raise $20,000 (£12,800) for manufacturing

Using a phone as a sat-nav while driving or as a mirror when applying lipstick, can be tricky.

But a new case could make using a phone’s different features easier, because it can be stuck to any flat surface to leave your hands free and doesn’t leave any sticky residue behind.

The Extra Verso case is coated with a resin that acts like thousands of tiny suction cups to cling to smooth surfaces, like a gecko, or even Spiderman.

Its makers, who are raising money on Indiegogo to put the accessory into production, claim it can cling to surfaces for hours, days and even months.

‘ExtraVerso is the revolutionary smartphone case with an extraordinary grip,’ they write.

‘Stick it to any glassy surface - take a selfie, record a video, or follow your GPS hands-free.’

The case comes in two parts – a cover and an optional bumper to protect the device.

A special adhesive that has been developed to be repositionable, meaning you can place it on the back of the phone and remove it many times, without leaving any sort of residue on your phone

The back cover is coated in an innovative material that sticks to flat or glassy surfaces but isn’t sticky in a user’s hands and doesn’t attract dust.

The resin coating was inspired by a product used on sailing boats to provide grip.

It reproduces the effect of thousands of mini-suction cups that grip tightly to all non-porous surfaces.

Because of this, it could be stuck to a car windscreen to be used as a sat-nav, or to a wall to be used as an impromptu mirror, TV or camera tripod, for hands-free selfies, for example.

Or it could just mean that a phone will not tumble to the floor if it's balanced precariously on a glass coffee table or kitchen work surface.

Examples of surfaces faces it can grip to include: glass, mirrors, tiles, computer screens, whiteboards, polished plastic and metal.

The 3M adhesive back has been developed to be repositionable, meaning it can be repeatedly applied to the back of a phone and removed, without leaving annoyingly sticky residue behind.

The case bumper sits around the adhesive sheet to protect the edges of a phone, but the adhesive can be used without it for users that like their phone slim and as the manufacturer intended.

The more smooth, flat and clean the surface, the longer the cover will stick to it, according to the Italian start-up.

Cases can be pre-ordered from Indiegogo from $30 (£20) and are available for the iPhone 5 and 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy S6.

At the time of writing, the start-up has raised almost 70 per cent of its $20,000 (£12,800) target.
