Seventies style, sustainable fashion, soft silhouettes - and look mum, NO HANDS! The breakout trends we'll be wearing this summer according to the David Jones catwalk

  • Kit Willow's new sustainable fashion label KITX was a highlight of the David Jones Spring/Summer fashion launch
  • Ellery and Strateas.Carlucci both showcased extremely long sleeves in their collections
  • Unstructured, billowing shapes were a standout trend on the catwalk
  • Monochrome designs were rife with Christopher Esber, Ellery, Josh Goot and Dion Lee showing black and white
  • Prepare for some interesting tan lines come summer, as JETS and Bec & Bridge presented strappy swimwear

David Jones ambassador Jessica Gomes opened the store's Spring/Summer fashion launch in Sydney on Wednesday night, dancing down the runway in a billowing mustard dress by KITX as Daniel Johns sang his new song We Are Golden.

The flowing silhouette set the standard for the evening, with soft, voluminous shapes appearing in Strateas.Carlucci, Willow, Christopher Esber, Akira, and Camilla and Marc.

Gomes nominated the long-sleeved dress as her favourite outfit of the show, when speaking to Daily Mail Australia ahead of the event.

The dress featured gold hardware on the plunging neckline, and a geometric belt.

'I love my opening KITX outfit - she does these ethical pieces and it’s all from artesians in India. She is creating work for communities and it's really incredible what shes done,' Jessica said.

'She's made an incredible come back,' the model added, referring to Kit Willow's return to the spotlight with her new label after being ejected from her brand Willow - which also presented clothing on the David Jones catwalk.

But it was KITX that was giving the coveted opening slot of the presentation, and the designer's soft, draping waterfall shapes and billowing dresses the talk of the show.

Montana Cox stepped out on the runway just behind fellow ambassador Gomes, wearing another of the standout KITX creations - a tie-front angle skirt with a deep V-neckline blouse.

Cox also nodded to Willow's new line as among her favourites: 'She’s offering a new range that’s all sustainable and ethical,' the model said.

The KITX collection is made up of easy-care fabrics such as linens, hemps and crushed organic cotton.

Both Gomes and Cox spoke of the Seventies inspiration behind many of the designer's collections, with unstructured suits, and flared sleeves and pant legs all popular.

Ellery and Strateas.Carlucci may be responsible for a phenomenon of disappearing hands this season, both presenting designs with comically long sleeves amongst their collections.
