Jessica Alba has responded to online backlash that the sunscreen she created for her organic beauty company Honor is causing people to get horrific sunburns - including children.

'Protecting our loved ones and yours is the reason we founded @honest. As parents, it pains us to hear that anyone has had a negative experience with our Sunscreen,' wrote Alba on her Instagram account.

'We develop and use Honest Sunscreen to protect our own children – Honor, Haven, Luke, Evie, and Poppy – at the park, in the pool, outside, every day. As with everything we do, we take sun protection seriously here at Honest.'

Honor and Haven are Alba's daughters, while Luke, Evie, and Poppy are the children of her business partner Christopher Gavigan.

'We have a dedicated team of Honest employees, parents, and partners who carefully reviewed our Sunscreen product to make sure that it meets our highest standards prior to release,' Alba went on to say in a letter posted on the Honest website.

'Our previous Sunscreen formulation had a 40-minute water resistance and customers told us that it didn’t apply as easily as they would’ve liked.

'Based on our own experience and consumer feedback, we redesigned our Sunscreen Lotion for 80-minute water resistance and an improved formulation that allows for easier application and a lighter-weight feel.'

Alba closed the letter by saying; 'Our team is reaching out to everyone who has posted on social media to assure you that we’re committed to your safety and satisfaction.

'For those who have expressed concerns about our Sunscreen Lotion, we want you to know that we hear you and we’re here for you.

'As always, we’ll do what it takes to make it right.'

Alba had been photographed heading to the company headquarters earlier this week, no doubt to discuss this problem.

NBC 5 had reported last month that it may have been a decrease in the amount of zinc in the product that caused the problems.

Complaints about the sunscreen have popped up on social media throughout the summer.

'Don't buy @Honest sunscreen unless u want to look like this,' wrote one irate mother on Twitter, posting a photo of herself with an angry red burn across her chest and arms.

'Second time I've tried this stuff and got fried. [sic]'

Some people even made clear that they'd used the product as directed, applying liberally and often, but still saw the same lack of results.

'I got sunburnt and I was outside with organic honest company sunscreen on for less than an hour [sic],' wrote one man, while another woman added: 'No offense to @Honest, but I will NEVER use your sunscreen again!! After applying it LIBERALLY every hr, my baby girl is burnt!! Not happy!!'

Others complained about how the protect felt on their skin, noting that it was 'greasy and icky' and 'turned to a layer of gunk' that wouldn't come off in the shower.

There are also many Honest users who have said that while they love most if not all of the products the company makes, they have problems with the sunscreen.
