Tottenham Hotspur still in Munich after failed attempts to leave Germany on Wednesday evening following AC Milan win

  • Tottenham Hotspur have been denied permission to leave Munich early
  • On Wednesday Spurs beat AC Milan 2-0 at the Allianz Arena and had wanted to return to London after the match
  • Club officials tried to bring their original flights forward ahead of Saturday's game against Manchester United
  • Spurs will now remain in Bavaria overnight, train at Bayern's complex in the morning and then fly home
  • They will take to the Old Trafford pitch at 12.45pm for the Premier League season opener

Spurs will remain in Munich overnight after being refused permission to fly home from their pre-season tournament early.

Club officials, at the prompting of manager Mauricio Pochettino, had tried to bring their service to London forward to Wednesday evening ahead of Saturday's 12.45pm season opener at Manchester United.

However, their request was turned down by German authorities who were unable to find an airport slot for them.

That means Pochettino's men will now have just 24 hours at home before flying to Manchester on Friday afternoon to face a United team whose last pre-season friendly was on July 30.

The Argentine admitted the situation was not ideal and, speaking after yesterday's 2-0 semi-final defeat to Real Madrid, revealed they would try to bring the flight forward.

That loss meant his side were in action against AC Milan in the earlier 6.15pm (5.15pm BST) kick-off at the Allianz Arena today.

But officials would not give the plan the green light.

That decision has raised some eyebrows at White Hart Lane after it emerged that Real, who play hosts Bayern Munich in the final at 8.45pm, have managed to land a flight back to Spain after their game.

Spurs, however, will remain in Bavaria overnight, train at Bayern's complex in the morning and then fly to London.

They are set to jet up to Manchester on Friday afternoon and stay in the city overnight before Saturday's clash at Old Trafford.

Pochettino also revealed Spurs had approached the Premier League about putting their match with United back 24 hours but were turned down.
