A 6-month-old baby was accidentally left in a car parked at a Maryland metro station as his father headed to work Wednesday morning.

The infant had spent close to three hours inside the locked vehicle at the Forest Glen Metro station in Silver Spring before the father called Montgomery County Police at around 10.15am.

First responders who arrived on the scene broke the windows in the vehicle and removed the baby, who was transported with Holy Cross Hospital with high fever. Temperatures outside were in the 80s at the time.

The baby's father arrived at the station by car at around 7am, left it in the parking lot and caught the 7.30am train to go to work.

It was not until the 31-year-old was on board a Red Line train that he realized his son wasn't with him and called the baby's grandparents for help, reported the station MyFox DC.

The family members arrived at the parking lot and tried to open the car, but to no avail.

Firefighters who were summoned to the scene were able to get inside the locked car, where they discovered the baby conscious and breathing.

The father is being interviewed by Metro Transit Police, but they won't issue a citation Wednesday. The case has been referred to Child Protective Services, and prosecutors will also look into it.

An eerily similar incident took place in May in Quincy, Massachusetts, when a distraught father called 911 from a train saying he had left his one-year-old daughter inside his parked SUV after forgetting to drop her off at a day care center.

The little girl was found unharmed in the backseat by responding police officers.
