She'll just have to Shake it Off! Taylor Swift beaten to the top spot on Vanity Fair's best-dressed list by Britain's first lady Samantha Cameron

  • Ballerina Misty Copeland, 32, rounded out the top three, while Amal Clooney, 37, and singer Rihanna, 27, placed fifth and sixth, respectively
  • British actor Bill Nighy was named as the best-dressed man, with Prince Harry and NFL star Russell Wilson also making the top ten
  • Benedict Cumberbatch and his new wife Sophie Hunter topped the list of best-dressed couples

The fashion world loves a good best-dressed list, and none are quite so anticipated and revered as the Vanity Fair International Best-Dressed List.

And, as is usually the case, this year's list has plenty of controversial inclusions - and omissions.

According to the publication, the best-dressed lady of 2015 is Samantha Cameron, 44, the wife of Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron - making her first appearance on the list since 2010 - while pop star Taylor Swift, 25, and ballerina Misty Copeland, 32, placed in second and third place, respectively.

No doubt many will be surprised by the publication's decision to place Mrs Cameron's so-called 'conservative charm' above the 25-year-old Shake It Off singer's 'prep power', however it seems Mrs Cameron's dedication to designer fashion helped her to nab the top spot.

The magazine's website names Phillip Lim, Erdem and Alexander McQueen among her favorite labels.

But while Mrs Cameron's appearance in the top spot might have come as a surprise to some, Amal Clooney's inclusion in the list, given her rise to sudden and widespread fame, and the new spotlight on her personal style, in the number five spot will no doubt have been expected by many.

Newcomer Misty Copeland, who made headlines around the world earlier this year when she became the first black principal ballet dancer to dance in the American Ballet Theater's Swan Lake, placed in the number three spot, with her favorite designers listed as Cushnie et Ochs, Helmut Lang, and Balmain.

However, after making the list for the past five years in a row, Kate Middleton was one of the most shocking omissions from the long-standing ranks, along with her husband Prince William.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge haven't been at quite as many fashion events in the last year given their growing family commitments so it is perhaps for this reason that the magazine opted to omit them, while still holding a spot for William's younger brother Prince Harry.

Harry, 30, placed in the eighth spot on the men's best-dressed list, and was praised by the publication for being an 'heir with flare'.

There was also plenty of other famous royal faces featured on the women's list, including Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Queen Letizia of Spain, and Charlotte Casiraghi, the granddaughter of Grace Kelly of Monaco and face of Gucci cosmetics.

Another royal included on the men's best-dressed list this year, was Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, being praised for the mess dress model 1878 uniform of the Swedish Amphibious Corps he wore to his wedding to Sofia Hellqvist.

The Brits were certainly well-represented on this year's list, with actor Bill Nighy topping the men's category; Vanity Fair applauded his love for the Margaret Howell and John Smedley clothing brands as well as his surprising admiration for the style of Pharrell Williams.

Other Brits on the list include actors Sienna Miller, Michael Fassbender, Emma Watson and Eddie Redmayne, as well as Sophie Hunter and Benedict Cumberbatch, who topped the list for best-dressed couple.

Business ladies: Vanity Fair favorite and investment banker Mellody Hobson (L) made a stylish appearance alongside fashion industry stalwarts like Moda Operandi founder and Vogue editor Lauren Santo Domingo (R)

Couples are up: Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter (L) topped the best-dressed couples list, while Matt Bomer and Simon Halls (R) placed fourth

More Brits: Emma Watson (L), Michael Fassbender (C) and Eddit Redmayne (R) made up some of the heavy British contingent on the list

Matt Bomer and his partner, Simon Halls, also made the dapper couples' list, as did newly weds - and even more royals - Arthur Wellesley and Jemma Kidd, the Marquess and Marchioness of Douro.

Aside from Taylor, Rihanna was also representing the musician contingent in the top ten, particularly recognized for her 'sultry swagger', while FKA twigs appeared on the best-dressed originals list for her idiosyncratic fashion picks.

Other red carpet winners, named on a special Hollywood-focused list, included beauties Charlize Theron, particularly recognized for the yellow Christian Dior gown she wore to the Mad Max premiere, and Chinese actress Fan Bingbing.

The professionals: Victoria Beckham (C) appeared on the professionals' best-dressed list behind Caroline Issa (L) and Zac Posen (R)

Mellody Hobson, the wildly successful businesswoman who married director George Lucas in 2013, also appeared on the list, having previously been praised by Vanity Fair for being 'regal' with a 'pixie-like quality' and for her astute fashion sense.

Victoria Beckham will undoubtedly be pleased to be included on the best-dressed professionals list along with designer Zac Posen, Caroline Issa of Tank Magazine and fashion consultant Nick Wooster.

Plenty of other behind-the-scenes art moguls found their way on to the list this year as well, from architect and decorator Robert Couturier to costume designer William Ivey Long.
