Gwyneth was accompanied by her actress mother Blythe Danner, 72, as she delivered a speech to the room about the bill titled the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 - or the 'DARK Act' as it's called by opponents (Denying Americans the Right to Know).

She said: 'I'm not here as an expert. I'm here as a mother, an American mother, that honestly believes I have the right to know what's in the food I feed my family.'

'My kids are normal American children and they eat everything everybody else eats' she said alongside fellow supporters of the campaign, Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Jon Tester of Montana.

'I'm a home cook and I'm a cookbook author, and I'm a proponent of organic food and healthy food when I can, but we all eat genetically modified food. It's in the food supply'

The Iron Man actress acknowledged that there are still unanswered questions about how harmful genetically modified organisms are to humans but stated that all consumers have a right to know which food contains them.

She continued: 'Much the way I want to know if my food is farm-raised, or wild, or if my orange juice is fresh or from concentrate. I also believe I have the right, and we as Americans all have the right to know what's in our food'

Just Label It - which boasts plenty of celebrity support - is a coalition of organic food companies seeking to defeat the bill in the Senate.

The mother-of-two said a petition by the group had received 200,000 signatures in six days, and that the target is to have half a million by the time the congressional recess is over at the end of August.

The actress - who has two children, Apple and Moses, with ex-husband Chris Martin once boasted about her strict macrobiotic diet but adopts a more relaxed approach these days.

The Contagion star told Women's Health in May: 'My food philosophy is: Nothing should be ruled out,'

'I don’t believe in saying, "You’re not allowed that." If my kids want a Shirley Temple with the radioactive cherry in it, go for it, you know?

'For lunch I usually have a big salad with grilled chicken, and then for dinner I’ll have whatever I want,

'Most nights I eat with the kids, like, a stir-fry of chicken and broccoli or pasta or roast chicken and potatoes.'

Oh my freshest sweetest peaches and burrata. Thank heaven for @camerondiaz and @benjaminmadden
