Hungry pet shocks its owner by copying baby and saying 'mama' in a bid to be fed

  • Australian Shepherd dog Patches stands in front of his owner Andrea Diaz-Giovanini who is holding a food container
  • Diaz-Giovanini attempts to get her nine-month-old son Samuel to talk by enticing him with the food and repeatedly says the word 'mama'
  • Samuel doesn't reply but Patches articulates the word to her surprise
  • The hilarious video, which was filmed in Utah, concludes with Samuel putting his hand to Patches' mouth to stop him talking

Sibling rivalry can often get the best out of an individual.

But generally speaking this tends to be the case when two of the same species are competing against one another - not a dog and a child.

Captured on camera is the incredible moment a pooch uttered the words 'mama' in a bid to get some food ahead of his human sibling.

The 30-second clip, which was filmed in Utah, features mom Andrea Diaz-Giovanini, her 10-year-old Australian Shepherd dog Patches and nine-month-old baby Samuel.

In an attempt to get Samuel to speak, Diaz-Giovanini tells her young son to say the word 'mama' while she appears to use the food as an incentive.

Diaz-Giovanini continually vocalises the word and addresses her son. But Samuel merely looks around the room looking slightly confused.

Meanwhile Patches the dog is standing alongside Samuel and whines in anticipation of some food and ever so slightly begins articulating the sound being made by Diaz-Giovanini.

Diaz-Giovanini then scoops up some of the food onto her fork and repeats the process - again addressing young Samuel.

Incredibly Patches then begins mouthing in a more controlled fashion and manages to clearly articulate the word 'mama'.

Diaz-Giovanini begins laughing in surprise as Patches shows off and says the word again.

Rather humorously, the video then concludes with Samuel reaching out his hand to stop Patches from talking - as if annoyed that Patches had spoken first.

Diaz-Giovanini told KSL.com: 'That week he (Samuel) had been saying ‘dada’ a lot and so we were trying really hard to coax him to say mama.'

The video was posted on America’s Funniest Video’s YouTube channel in February after the family sent it in, but it has just gone viral in the last few weeks.

Diaz-Giovanini told KSL that AFV has contacted them about possibly being on the TV show this fall, but those plans have not yet been solidified.

It has been viewed on the family's YouTube channel 1.5million times and impressed viewers have shared their love for the video.

SimpleVillain wrote: 'That dog deserves more than just that bite of food after that!!'

While OwlieBub said: 'Aww, your fur baby's first words! Should have given him the food, then taught him a few more. Smart sweet little thing.'

The family has also made a video of now 16-month-old Samuel saying 'hi' as a 'thank you' to those who watched his video with Patches.

And they said Patches did get a treat for being a good boy.
