A man shot dead his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself at a Texas gas station Wednesday as the couple's two teenage sons looked on.

The suspected murder-suicide took place at a Timewise Exxon gas station in The Woodlands, where the recently separated couple arrived to exchange temporary custody of their children.

Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene in the 6500 block of College Park Drive at around 7.30pm in response to reports of a shooting.

Responding officers discovered a man and a woman lying on the ground with gunshot wounds.

The husband was pronounced dead at the scene, while his wife was taken to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

Witnesses said the parents were having a conversation about their children’s custody at the gas station when the man got angry, pulled a gun and shot his spouse in the head before killing himself, reported the local station ABC13

The couple's two sons witnessed the murder-suicide of their parents but were not physically harmed. They are now staying with grandparents.

The names of the deceased couple have not been released by the sheriff's office as of Thursday morning.
