  • She recently split from boyfriend of eight months Charlie Ebersol
  • The app has helped her relax and look forward to exercise

Britney Spears has put her recent split with Charlie Ebersol behind her to unveil an enviably toned figure, which sources say was achieved through meditation.

The 33-year-old star, whose weight has fluctuated over the years thanks to her love of junk food, is said to have used a 20-minute app to lose 'a stone in six weeks'.

However is the alternative therapy really a legitimate way to shed the pounds? FEMAIL talks to consultant psychiatrist Dr Eric Johnson-Sabine to find out.

According to Closer Magazine, the pop singer has been using a meditation app everyday to beat anxiety and stress.

In addition the mother-of-two is also taking on a healthier lifestyle, opting for spinach and fruit smoothies.

It was revealed that the singer felt she had gained weight before and after her split from 33-year-old producer Charlie Ebersol, who she dated for eight months.

A source said: 'Britney has always struggled with anxiety. Learning to meditate, relax her mind and body and have happy thoughts has made her change dramatically.

She lives in the moment more and, instead of moaning about working out, she looks forward to it, revealing the endorphins make her think 'happy thoughts.'

'Britney has lost a stone in six weeks, going from a size 12 to an 8-10.'

Consultant psychiatrist at Nightingale Hospital, Dr Eric Johnson-Sabine, suggests that meditation is not such a far-fetched method for losing weight, especially in light of the star's recent heartbreak.

He said: 'Mindfulness is an incredibly useful tool; it helps with stress reduction and directing attention to immediate experience in the present.

'In this way it can be used by patients to make good food choices and bring their focus to the process of eating.

'It is a useful technique that is commonly used as part of a more comprehensive psychological treatment for obesity - and whilst it can be an important part of treatment, it still is by no means a solution.'

Britney has been notoriously unlucky in love: her high-profile relationship with Justin Timberlake ended in 2002 after three years amid cheating rumours.

Her first marriage to childhood friend Jason Alexander was annulled in 2004, and she divorced husband Kevin Federline - father of her two sons, Jayden, now eight, and Sean, nine - in 2006 after two years.

The pop star also called off her engagement to former talent agent, Jason Trawick in 2013, and then came her recent split with Ebersol.

Psychiatrist Dr Eric Johnson-Sabine added: 'Emotions can be a very strong driver for over (and under) eating.

'So for those who tend to overeat when they feel stressed or unhappy, addressing the underlying psychological triggers and root causes of over-eating is a focal part of any psychological treatment.'

Dr Johnson-Sabine, insists that it is ultimately about relaxation and clearing the mind.

He said: 'There are a number of good guided meditation apps that people can download to their smart phones, which teach the basics of focusing on breath, the presence and observing thoughts without judgement.

'One app that I sometimes recommend is HeadSpace, but there are many other good ones available.'

Britney Spears returns to the stage for her Piece of Me shows in Las Vegas, beginning August 5.
