A man who murdered his teenage girlfriend by inflicting 172 wounds on her with knives, an axe, pieces of wood, hammers and a garden paver in an 'ice rage' attack has been jailed for life.

Rodney Kevin Corbett, 30, was sentenced on Thursday to serve a minimum of 18 years prison for fatal bashing of 18-year-old Colleen Tae Ford in the house they shared in Perth in 2013, the West Australian reported.

After Justice Ralph Simmonds passed sentence on Corbett in the Western Australia Supreme Court, Ms Ford's family clapped and cheered as he was led away to the cells.

Colleen Ford was an Aboriginal woman from the WA central wheatbelt town of Merredin, 260km north-east of Perth.

So sustained and extensive was the attack on her, that doctors would later catalogue her injuries in a horrifying body diagram of Ms Ford who weighed just 50kg.

At the time of her murder, Ms Ford had been grieving for two months over the unborn baby son she lost when her partner Corbett punched her pregnant belly.

On the evening of October 11, 2013, , Corbett, 30, bit and strangled Ms Ford and stabbed and struck her with an arsenal of weapons believed to include knives, an axe, pieces of wood, gardening clippers, a paver, a Swiss Army knife and hammers.

The overnight attack in the brick home in the East Perth suburb of Beckenham, left Ms Ford unconscious, still breathing, but mortally wounded. Corbett had struck her 41 times in the neck and head, so hard that her brain came away from its central axis.

An ambulance called to Chiddington Street, Beckenham at about 8am found Ms Ford lying in 'a rigid state' on the couch of the public housing home. She died in Royal Perth Hospital the following day.

Her post mortem determined that 41 head and neck blows had caused her death, but found a further 32 injuries to her right arm, 30 to her left arm, 11 to her right leg, 19 to her left leg, 29 to the trunk of her body and ten to her genital area. Forensic examiners found a total of 172 wounds and injuries.

According to The Australian Ms Ford's family says she had previously reported Corbett for domestic violence and had tried to leave him. Tragically, she never managed to escape.

Following Ms Ford's death, police charged Corbett with murder, despite an assertion by his lawyer that there was no independent witness to the alleged crime, no forensic evidence and that it was Corbett who had called emergency services to the house.

Inside the house, police found Ms Ford's blood spread 'far and wide' throughout and on items including knives, an axe, pieces of wood, gardening clippers, a paver, a Swiss Army knife and hammers.

Corbett, who has been held in prison following his arrest in 2013, went to trial in late April for Ms Ford's murder.

Following the vicious, fatal assault on Colleen Ford, police released this CCTV footage of the 18-year-old not long before her death as they investigated Rodney Corbett's claims of innocence, eventually charging him with her murder, which has resulted in a conviction this week

During a 12-day murder trial in the WA Supreme Court before Justice Simmonds, a jury heard that Colleen Ford's 'tragic and brutal death' had come after she had tried to end her relationship with Corbett at least once.

Notes and a diagram made in hospital of Ms Ford's wounds and entitled 'Documentation of injuries' was shown to the jury.

The diagram marked lacerations and bruises on the arms, shoulders and head of a stick figure representing Ms Ford, and included puncture wounds, a chipped front tooth and noted that the legs were 'mostly covered' and the anterior chest, back and abdomen were 'covered' in injuries.

The court heard that on the morning of October 11, 2013 Corbett called an ambulance, claiming that Ms Ford had arrived home already injured.

The jury didn't believe him. In May this year, Corbett was found guilty of Ms Ford's murder and awaited his sentencing in custody.

Folloiwng the conviction, the victim's mother Ruby Hayden told The Australian that after the stillbirth of her baby, Ms Ford had said she would tell  police about the assault which caused it.

Ms Hayden said her daughter had secretly confided she didn’t want to be with Corbett, and had promised to leave him so she could stop using methamphetamines, find a job and return to her family.

'They were on-and-off because he’d always belt her and she’d take off to her family or come home to me.

'She was everything, she was my baby. When she was with us, she was happy.'
