Holy smokes! Jude Law enjoys cigarette break in papal robes while filming scenes for TV series The Young Pope

He's currently hard at work filming a new TV show, taking on the role of the Pope.

So it's no surprise Jude Law felt the need for some down time in between shooting scenes on location in Rome, as he was spotted having a cigarette break on Tuesday.

Still clad in his Bishop of Rome costume - complete with with the white skullcap, long papal robes and collar - the British actor certainly cut an unusual figure as he puffed away while chatting to a member of the crew.

It's clear that the wardrobe department on the TV series The Young Pope has paid attention to detail, as the actor was also wearing red shoes, the very same worn by The Pope.

The 42-year-old is playing the role of a conservative pontiff brought in to shake up the Vatican in the highly-anticipated new eight-part TV series.

Although it's unlikely Jude's character as His Holiness will be puffing away on the show, it certainly seems as though his on-screen alter ego is rather liberal, as he was also seen on the set in a casual white tracksuit.

The London-born actor will portray the first Italian-American to be elected as the Bishop of Rome in the new show from director Paolo Sorrentino.

Jude is currently shooting in the Italian capital and was seen sporting full regalia earlier this week, but he went for a more laid-back vibe as he mingled with the production crew.

Wearing a white tracksuit with matching trainers, it's not known whether the actor's pontiff character prefers a relaxed outfit outside of his duties or if the star decided to sport the ensemble himself during a break from filming scenes, but he appeared in good spirits as he chatted between takes.

One person who was definitely sticking to her character was Diane Keaton, who plays American nun Sister Mary on the show, her first ever regular small screen role.

The Oscar winner was seen wearing full black and white habit as she headed towards the shoot alongside a member of the production team, before speaking to the director alongside Jude.

The series tells the story of Pontificate of Pius XIII, born Lenny Belardo, who takes a hardline approach to his faith and those he surrounds himself with.

Speaking about his new project, Sorrentino, who will direct all episodes, explains: 'The clear signs of God’s existence. The clear signs of God’s absence. How faith can be searched for and lost.

'The greatness of holiness, so great as to be unbearable when you are fighting temptations and when all you can do is to yield to them.

'The inner struggle between the huge responsibility of the Head of the Catholic Church and the miseries of the simple man that fate (or the Holy Spirit) chose as Pontiff.

'Finally, how to handle and manipulate power in a state whose dogma and moral imperative is the renunciation of power and selfless love towards one’s neighbour. That is what ‘The Young Pope’ is about.'

Meanwhile, Jude has been enjoying some down-time amid filming, exploring Rome with his new girlfriend Phillipa Coan, 29.
