Lavern - a well-known activist for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans community - made sure she wowed with her sizzling sartorial style as she attended the opening night of Lin-Manuel Miranda's historical hip-hop musical.

The Orange Is The New Black star wore a chic yet elegant full-length dress which accentuated her figure whilst retaining an air of sophistication - teamed with a pair of white and black stiletto heels.

Accessorizing with a geometric print clutch, Lavern let her striking natural features shine through by wearing a skin-tone pallet of make-up, with a flash of scarlet lipstick to plump-up her lips.

And while she was one of the stand-out fashionistas on the red carpet, Hamilton itself has been creating a huge buzz - due to its ground-breaking mix of hip-hop, musical theatre and common history.

The musical by composer, rapper and actor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton - one of George Washington's chief aids during the birth of the United States.

Hamilton, is the biographical story of one of the nation's most famous immigrants making his mark in the nation's history told through the medium of hip-hop - helping to draw direct parallels between the country's original migrants and their struggle with that of the modern day immigrant.

After performing the musical's first song at the White House in 2009, the premiere for Hamilton was always going to attract a slew of A-Listers.

And while the stars are watching the Broadway first, describing one struggle taking place in America, Laverne herself recently spoke about her own struggles as a transgender woman.

Speaking to Nylon magazine in July, Laverne revealed that she once wanted to feminize her appearance through surgery just like Caitlyn Jenner has done but couldn't afford it.

However she revealed that she's now glad she didn't go down that road, because it has meant she's had to accept and embrace herself as a trans person.

She revealed: 'Years ago I wanted to have the kind of cosmetic facial feminization surgery that Caitlyn [Jenner] has made popular in terms of people’s understanding. But I didn’t have the money to do it.

'I’m so blessed and grateful that I didn’t because I would look completely different.

'I’ve had to learn to love and accept all those things about me that make me distinctly trans: my broad shoulders, my big hands and feet, my deep voice.'
