Eccentric tech millionaire John McAfee has been arrested in Tennessee after being caught driving under the influence and for illegal gun possession, police say.
McAfee, who created the virus-scanning software by the same name, was found driving erratically along a road in Henderson County on Sunday night and was arrested, police said.
McAfee later admitted to being under the influence of Xanax, but said it was a new prescription and he was not aware it would impair his driving.
He added that he is the legal owner of the gun found in his car, and that his only crime was possessing it while intoxicated, which he maintained was an accident.
McAfee, who once amassed a fortune of more than $100million from his security software, has since become known for his increasingly bizarre behavior.
He is also still wanted in Belize for questioning over the murder of his neighbor Gregory Faull, 52, in November 2012.
McAfee fled the country after the killing, claiming Belize officials were attempting to jail him for possessing information on government corruption, and described living on the run in America for several years before settling in Tennessee.
Writing on Facebook following his most recent arrest, McAfee said: 'Yes, I was arrested while under the influence of Xanax.
McAfee later claimed the pills (pictured) were a new prescription and his doctor had not informed him he could not take them while driving
'It was a brand new prescription received the same day of the arrest and the physician neglected to warn me about driving while taking it.
'As to the weapons, I always carry them and, unless one is impaired, they are legal to possess and carry.'
According to other news reports, McAfee said he had dropped his cell phone on to the floor of his car and was reaching down to get it when his driving became erratic.
He then added: 'The shootout with the police was highly exaggerated and in fact no one was even hit by a bullet, let alone harmed by one.
In a rambling Facebook post after the arrest, McAfee also discussed being involved in a shootout with police, but later claimed he had only been joking
'The Police knew me and I don't believe their hearts were truly in the shootout, as it is not included in the official report.
'When I ran out of ammunition, I surrendered quietly and the officers and my self had a cigarette together and joked about my bad aim.'
However, he has since distanced himself from those claims, saying they were meant as a joke. Officers from the local Sheriff's Department have refused to say whether shots were fired.
He has now been released on a bond, and will be called back to court on a date yet to be set.
