'I would say Obama's incompetent... but that's not nice': Round-up of the best GOP debate one-liners

  • Chris Christie, Donald Trump and Mike Huckabee launched zingers
  • Hopefuls turned on one another - and Hillary Clinton - in first major debate
  • Ten leading GOP figures went head-to-head in Cleveland, Ohio, stadium
  • Huckabee joked about his age, Chris Christie attacked Rand Paul
  • Jeb Bush claimed that he is known as Veto Corleone because of aggressive approach to budget control

They may have hoped to win over viewers with their principles and policies - but Republican presidential candidates weren't short on one-liners, either, in their first major clash.

Donald Trump, Chris Christie, Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul all had a zinger up their sleeves in the lengthy clash Thursday night at the Quicken Loans arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Even more demure candidates like Jeb Bush and Scott Walker managed to raise a laugh alongside those famous for running their mouths, with less popular candidates in their first-round debates distinguishing themselves as well.

Mike Huckabee

The former Arkansas governor, 59, made a self-deprecating jibe about his own age while attacking the state of investment in the U.S. military.

He said: 'A lot of the B-52s we're flying, we've only got 44 in service combat ready, and the fact is most of them are older than me... and that's pretty scary'.

Chris Christie

The outspoken New Jersey governor had harsh words for Kentucky senator Rand Paul when the two clashed over NSA collection of phone records.

Paul said that he wanted to stop bulk collection and only target those whom authorities already suspect of wrongdoing - which Christie said was impractical and 'ridiculous'.

But when Paul yelled 'get a warrant!' at him, Christie responded: 'Listen Senator, you know, when you’re sitting in a subcommittee just blowing hot air about this, you can say things like that.

'When you’re responsible for protecting the lives of the American people, then what you need to do is to make sure you use the system the way it’s supposed to work.'

Jeb Bush

Usually known as the straight man, Bush managed to inject a burst of humor - and a Sopranos reference - when describing his record while governor of Florida.

Bush said: 'They call me Veto Corleone... because I vetoed 2,500 separate line items in the budget.'

The pun refers to Vito Corleone, the top New York mafioso in the Godfather films. He has used the joke before, but it still played well among the audience.

Donald Trump

The GOP frontrunner is always quick with an insult - and his reputation to bear with another in a long line of attacks on Obama.

During a foreign policy discussion, The Donald knowingly said: 'We have a president who doesn’t have a clue. I would say he’s incompetent... but I don’t want to do that because that’s not nice.'

Scott Walker

Walker took on Hillary Clinton in his discussion of foreign policy - leading him to a jibe about her controversial private email server.

He said: 'Per the cyberattack on Russia the other day - it's quite sad to think right now, but probably the Russian and the Chinese government know more about Hillary Clinton's email server than do the members of the United States Congress.

'And that has put our national security at risk.'

Ben Carson

The former neurosurgeon played on his former career while distinguishing himself as somebody who hasn't been sullied by everyday politics.

He said: 'I'm the only one to take out half a brain, but if you went to Washington you would think someone had beat me to it.'

Trump again

Another Trump comment - which elicited much laughter from his audience - was a controversial jibe at a female comedian.

While being confronted by host Megyn Kelly with a list of insults he's hurled at women - including 'fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals', Trump replied 'only Rosie O'Donnell'.

Marco Rubio

Hillary Clinton - and all her rivals in the Democratic party - became fodder for the Florida senator, who took aim at her while, unusually, praising his rivals.

He said: 'God has blessed us with some very good candidates. The Democrats can't even find one.'

Rick Perry

Although he spoke in the earlier 'Happy Hour' debate at 5pm, Rick Perry also made a contribution to the Clinton-bashing parade.

The former Texas governor was asked, along with several other candidates, to describe Clinton in two words.

His reply was: 'Good at email.'
