His side were temporarily reduced to nine men during the closing stages of the Barclays Premier League match after Hazard received medical attention from doctor Eva Carneiro. Club doctor Carniero immediately dashed on to the pitch to treat Hazard but Mourinho insisted the medic made the wrong decision.

Wenger given green light to break Arsenal transfer record and wage structure to sign Real's Benzema

Arsene Wenger given green light to sign Karim Benzema in club record transfer

Arsene Wenger has been given the all clear to break Arsenal's transfer record to land Karim Benzema. And the Gunners are also willing to eclipse current record signing Mesut Ozil's £150,000-per-week wages to land their No 1 target. Wenger is desperate to land Benzema this summer, believing the Real Madrid striker is the final piece in the jigsaw that would turn his side into genuine title contenders.

OLIVER HOLT: Cech isn't the last piece of Arsenal's jigsaw, he is the first - but has Wenger missed a golden chance to win Premier League title?

Chelsea have not strengthened yet. Man United are mired in uncertainty over David de Gea and Manchester City are at a crossroads. And so the stage should be set for Arsenal.

Courtois sent off as defending champions Chelsea are held at home by Swansea... but was keeper's foul on Gomis outside box?

Chelsea 2-2 Swansea: Bafetimbi Gomis nets equaliser for visitors after Thibaut Courtois

CHELSEA 2-2 SWANSEA - SAMI MOKBEL AT STAMFORD BRIDGE: It's far too early to start conclusion jumping. Anyway, it's not in Jose Mourinho's style. But, if the Chelsea manager needed reminding of how difficult it will be to retain their title crown, he's had it. In the end, the champions started their campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Swansea. However, the fact Garry Monk's side left Stamford Bridge bitterly disappointed not have won tells you everything.

No superstars or egos, England heroes win over a nation with emphatic Ashes triumph

Band of Brothers bring in new era... England's inspiring team ethic sees a nation cover

OLIVER HOLT AT TRENT BRIDGE: A summer that began with England and their fans haunted by the braying ghosts of the past ended shortly before midday on Saturday with the recapture of the Ashes and the coronation of a team whose zest for cricket has taught the country to fall in love with the game again. Poor Nathan Lyon became the symbol of Australia's miserable failures when, 20 minutes before midday on an overcast morning by the River Trent, he dragged a ball from Mark Wood on to his stumps as he tried to leave it and sank to his haunches, alone in his despair.

We were lucky and must improve, says Van Gaal as stuttering new-look United beat Tottenham thanks to own goal from Walker

Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham: Kyle Walker own goal hands Louis van Gaal's side victory

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 TOTTENHAM - ROB DRAPER AT OLD TRAFFORD: At least it was better than this time last year. Then the bright, new dawn of Louis van Gaal's managerial reign ended with a 2-1 defeat by Swansea at Old Trafford. And on that day United were truly awful. On Saturday, they were merely ponderous and leggy. Nothing like a side who might challenge for the title, mind, but they were not terrible. And there were some genuine positives. Memphis Depay was sharp and enthusiastic, bringing much-needed pace and incision to United's forward line; Matteo Darmian's thrusting runs down the right will be a feature of the season, with Van Gaal awarding him the prize of best debutant on the day.

GLENN HODDLE: Liverpool concede too many goals... we'll find out this year if it's as easy to build a defence as Rodgers says

Liverpool have conceded far too many goals in the last two seasons... we'll find out this

There is nothing wrong with shutting up shop in football. No manager should be criticised for ensuring his defence is solid even if, at times, it means sacrificing your attacking flair. And sometimes, the best thing in football is simply to get to or beyond the 18-yard line and put in a cross. Both these facets can get lost in the modern game. No one values a passing team more than me; I always wanted my sides to play that way. But it is also true you have to adapt as a manager.

Eleven years on Ranieri is back and off to a flyer as Leicester beat Sunderland in thriller

Leicester City 4-2 Sunderland: Claudio Ranieri gets off to flying start as Foxes win

LEICESTER CITY 4-2 SUNDERLAND - LAURIE WHITWELL AT THE KING POWER STADIUM: The crisp suit and snappy hand signals looked just as they had 11 years ago, when Claudio Ranieri last bossed a Premier league touchline. This was also a result and performance like those he became accustomed to during that period at Chelsea. This was a comprehensive home win built on expansive attacking football, leaving opponents Sunderland beaten in play and spirit. How much of this startling result is owed to Nigel Pearson's foundations and how much to Sunderland's utterly dreadful defending, time will decide.
