They're a hot Hollywood couple who make sure to populate their social media accounts with plenty of beach body shots.

And newlyweds Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed indulged in their favourite pastime of posting shirtless snaps to Instagram as they enjoyed a lake retreat with their beloved dog Ira

Ian, 36, shared a photo of himself shirtless beside his bikini-clad wife, 27, as they splashed about in a lake on Sunday.

'Lake time with part of my little family... Smiling is truly one of the keys to life I'm convinced. Hope you smile today-it's good to do,' he wrote. 

The trio appeared to have just enjoyed a dip in the calm waters.

Nikki, her wet hair worn down in loose curls, looked blissful as she relaxed on the boat wrapped up in a towel while sporting a white triangle bikini.

Her shirtless husband grinned as he snapped the photo, as their canine rested behind them while wearing a red life jacket.

It seems Nikki and her husband are still revelling in the early stages of marital bliss.

She captioned the touching photo: 'Me and my human. Hugs can have a really beautiful effect. I met a little girl at the airport today, and we spoke about the importance of talking, hugging, engaging, connecting. 

'Not living in your phone. Pretty cool stuff. I have that same convo with my little brother all the time. Remembering how to be human. Together.'

Meanwhile, Ian has made no secret of his love for his new wife.

When asked by E! News to share the sexiest thing he first sees when he wakes up in the morning, he replied: 'My wife.' 

'The most beautiful human being in the world,' the actor gushed. 'I'm the luckiest man on the planet.' 

In addition to life as newlyweds, the couple are gearing up for more work to come.

While Nikki has joined the cast of Sleepy Hollow as Betsy Ross, her husband recently indicated he had returned to the set of Vampire Diaires.

Earlier this week, the actor Instagrammed a photo of a parking sign that read Reserved Parking For Cast.

Ian referenced his character when he captioned the photo, 'Back to being Damon...'
