General sanctions are sanctions that apply to all editors working in particular topic areas of Wikipedia. In addition to this, individual editors may be subject to additional specific editing restrictions; see Wikipedia:Editing restriction. Also see the user essay on sanctions at Wikipedia:Sanctions (essay).

General sanctions are a tool used by the community or the Arbitration Committee to improve the editing atmosphere of an article or topic area. When general sanctions are employed, they are specifically detailed instructions by which community consensus or ArbCom motion has empowered administrators to act single-handedly to sanction editors who are not complying with general behavioral or editorial guidelines and policies.

Types of sanctions

Article probation

Article probation places certain articles under increased scrutiny by administrators. Editors who make disruptive edits to articles that have been placed on probation may be banned from further editing of such articles, as well as related articles and/or project pages. Anyone editing an article on probation should be especially mindful of content policies, such as neutral point-of-view, and interaction policies, such as WP:CIVIL, WP:NPA, WP:3RR, and WP:POINT. Discretionary sanctions

In areas of conflict, the Arbitration Committee can authorise administrators to impose sanctions on editors who, after being notified of a decision made during an arbitration case, repeatedly or seriously fail to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behaviour, or any normal editorial process. Administrators may impose a broad range of sanctions, including blocks of up to one year, article or topic bans, and revert restrictions. In addition, community discussions can authorise sanctions that echo those established by the Arbitration Committee, with the exception of appeal and logging procedures. Revert restrictions

Pages or topic areas may be subject to restrictions on the number of reverts an editor may perform during a specific period of time. For more information, see this page. The most common revert restriction is the one-revert rule.

Process

Arbitration Committee sanctions

The Arbitration Committee may impose general sanctions on all editors working in a particular area, usually following an arbitration case. Administrators employing sanctions must issue appropriate notifications, and log all sanctions imposed, as specified in each case. General sanctions established by the Arbitration Committee may be revoked by passing a "motion in a prior case". Editors wishing to report possible violations of Arbitration Committee sanctions should do so at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement.

Community sanctions

The community may also impose general sanctions on all editors working in a particular area, usually after a discussion at the administrators' noticeboard. Administrators employing these sanctions must issue appropriate notifications, and log all sanctions imposed, as specified in each case. The issuing of notifications is an informal process whereby an editor that edits a topic area that is subject to general sanctions is made aware that the general sanctions exist. Administrators may not impose sanctions unless an editor has previously been made aware of the existence of these sanctions. Any editor may make another editor aware of the sanctions, and then log the notification, as specified in each case. This notification is not a warning about editor behaviour, and may not be revoked. It is purely informational. Full procedures for issuing notifications mirror those of Arbitration Committee sanctions, as described here. Editors or administrators that wish to overturn an action carried out under the auspices of community-established sanctions must either appeal to the imposing administrator, or gain consensus for an overturning at the administrators' noticeboard. If general sanctions are no longer needed in a topic area, they may be revoked through discussion at the administrators' noticeboard. Likewise, editors wishing to report possible violations of community sanctions should do so at the administrators' noticeboard.

The article may be reviewed on the motion of any arbitrator, or upon acceptance by the Arbitration Committee of a motion made by any user. Users whose editing is disruptive may be banned or their editing restricted as the result of a review. Amended by motion Additionally, any uninvolved administrator may impose a reasonable editing restriction (for example, 1RR) or page ban upon any editor who repeatedly engages in disruptive or uncivil editing of Free Republic or any closely related page. Prem Rawat	Prem Rawat, broadly construed	Standard discretionary sanctions	An amendment to the case in December 2012 superseded the previously imposed article probation with standard discretionary sanctions for all pages relating to Prem Rawat, broadly construed . All previously imposed sanctions under article probation should be considered discretionary sanctions.
