Shatner and Nimoy starred opposite another in the hit sci fi franchise Star Trek which began in the 1960s
Within days he had more than 6,000 entries from dedicated Trekkies posing in Spock's famous greeting which have now been compiled into a giant mosaic.
He later thanked fans and tweeted: 'Why did I ask for all those selfies? For... a tribute to Leonard. Thank you!'
Shatner has even submitted the tribute portrait to the Guinness Book of Records for consideration.

Star Trek is renowned for its dedicated following of fans - known as Trekkies.
Nimoy appeared in the popular series, which first aired in the 1960s, as the pointy-eared half-human, half-Vulcan Spock.
From the original pilot in 1964, he went onto play the beloved character for years, right up until the recent film Star Trek Into Darkness.
He also featured in many other films and TV shows, such as Mission Impossible, Rawhide, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers but could never quite escape his Star Trek role.
His 1975 autobiography, I Am Not Spock, was criticized by some fans as it appeared to reject the character but he always maintained he had a lot of love for Spock.

He has even had an asteroid posthumously named after him on June 2, this year in his honour.
And while he may have struggled to break away from the character, Nimoy was always keen to engage with his fans so it's likely he would have approved of the fitting tribute.
