By: Joshua Cook

In an exclusive interview with Benswann.com,  Jim Fox, the scout leader of the Mid-Iowa Boy Scout Troop 111, explained what happened earlier this month at a checkpoint along the Alaska – Canada border.

At the check point, one of the boys took a picture of the border agent and “threw the agent into a frenzy.” According to Fox, the agent immediately confiscated the camera, told the boy that he could be subjected to 10 years of prison or a $10,000 fine. The boys and driver were escorted inside the border patrol station.

“The border agent tried to bait me. He wanted to get a reaction out of me and I did not give it to him,” said Fox. The border agent didn’t want Fox to follow him while he searched the van because Fox might turn over “search techniques to the undesirables.”

One of the agents asked to see one of the bags of the scouts. One scout knew where the bag was and tried to get the bag to assist the agent. That’s when Fox said an agent had a loaded pistol pointed at the boy.

Fox said that the boy thought the agent was going to shoot him and got back into the van. “They were sitting there scared to death,” said Fox.

“And for our government to take these young men and illegally search them and illegally seize and pull a weapon on these kids — something is wrong.”

Benswann.com’s Joshua Cook asked Fox, “Did you feel at that moment that you still lived in America?”

“No,” said Fox. “I didn’t and neither did the boys.”

Fox said that they have experienced this type of intimidation before with the TSA in Orlando, FL. In the Orlando one of the eagle scouts accidentally dropped his boots after going through a full search.

One of the officers said, “..if that boy doesn’t calm down I will arrest him and remove him from this airport.” Fox asked the officer, “what did the boy do?”

“He dropped his boots in a threatening manner, said the officer.”

The border patrol agent asked Fox, “I suppose you’re wondering why we are doing this?” While pointing at the teenage boy the agent told Fox, “It’s our job to protect this border, It’s our job to keep terrorists from crossing the border.”

Senator Chuck Grassley told Fox News, “It’s outrageous that a border patrol agent would point a gun at a boy scout just for taking a picture,” he told the television station. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

Cook asked Fox if he thought his Fourth Amendment was violated?

“Totally,” answered Fox.

Fox had a meeting scheduled with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) this week to discuss the event, but will not attend without a constitutional attorney from the Rutherford Institute. According to Fox’s Facebook page, The Rutherford Institute offered to represent him.

Cook asked, “Is there any video footage of this event?” According to Fox, the DHS will not send a copy of the video it to him, media organizations or Sen. Grassley.

Fox told Cook that the Rutherford Institute will submit a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to access the video. DHS claims there is no audio of the event.

Cook asked Fox, “In light of the open borders and drug cartels going back and forth at the southern border freely, does it anger you at all that the focus of border security is on patriotic groups like the Boy Scouts?

”It’s frustrating,” said Fox. “It’s frustrating that we give these thugs that kind of power.”

“And for our government to take these young men and illegally search them and illegally seize and pull a weapon on these kids — something is wrong,” said Fox.

“But they’re questioning whether or not they can go back into their own country…something’s not right!”

UPDATE: Fox has made his first national television appearance on the Rick Amato Show on the One American News Network. Below, you can see the Amato interview.

Big Pharma

Preface by: TLB

Why is so much harm perpetrated against humanity being overlooked by those we trust to protect us? How complicit are these very individuals and organization in the proliferation of disease and death for motives that only encompass greed and profit … or is it something much more devious?

How many diseases suffered by, and considered blights on humanity, first saw the light of day in a Big Pharmaceutical laboratory, either by detection or design?

This is a tough video to watch, but much of what we (who are labeled as conspiracy theorists) have been discussing, heralding and presenting for years is explained in this video. Big Pharmaceutical is NOT benevolent and caring as they (and their commercials) would have you believe, quite the contrary!

Please take the time to watch this video in its entirety … I guarantee you will never look at Big Pharmaceutical and responsible governments the same way again …

The Origin of AIDS and HIV May Not Be What You Have Learned
Emerging Viruses: AIDS & Ebola — Nature, Accident or Intentional?

By: Dr. Leonard Horowitz

The answer to this question was singularly advanced by a Harvard-degreed independent investigator, Dr. Leonard Horowitz in the award winning book Emerging Viruses: AIDS & Ebola — Nature, Accident or Intentional? (Tetrahedron Press, 1998; 1-888-508-4787)

Dr. Horowitz unearthed and reprinted stunning scientific documents and National Institutes of Health contracts proving that chimpanzees, contaminated with numerous viruses, were used to produce hundreds of hepatitis B vaccine doses administered to central African Blacks along with homosexual men in New York City at precisely the time Dr. Myers and colleagues claim the origin of HIV “punctuated event” occurred.

Unfortunately, as another Royal Society conference presenter, Dr. Julian Cribb, protested, too little attention is given by drug-industry-influenced medical journals, and the mainstream media, to controversial truths in science regarding the origin of HIV and AIDS. (See: Cribb J. The origin of acquired immune deficiency syndrome: can science afford to ignore it? Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond B (2001) 356:935-938.) As a result, documents such as those published by Dr. Horowitz, and others, showing AIDS apparently derives from contaminated hepatitis B vaccines, have never received adequate attention.

Infant vaccination 2

By TLB Contributor & Talk Show Host: Leslie Carol Botha – “Communications Manager” for A Shot of Truth Campaign

Dr. Andrew Wakefield addressed a packed audience at the 12th annual AutismOne Conference. In his presentation (excerpt below), he discussed recent polls and surveys that indicate a “massive proportion” of medical consumers are questioning vaccine safety and efficacy. Even though the pharmaceutical industry spends $30 billion annually on vaccine promotions through PR firms, Wakefield declared that Pharma has failed because of the growing percentage of consumers who are becoming aware of the issue.

He cited a recent poll that reported 29% of U.S. adults today believe vaccines cause autism. According to Dr. Wakefield that number is approximately 1/3 of all parents with children under 18. In 2011, only 18% of adults felt that vaccines caused autism.

The question begs to be answered: is this growth in awareness due to the vaccine safety and efficacy campaigns? Or is the percentage growth sadly due to the rise in numbers of parents with children now on the autism spectrum?

Dr. Wakefield then reported that a stunning 76% of respondents in a National Consumer League poll indicated that consumers have the prerogative to decide how and if their children should be vaccinated.  He followed up with this comment: “The harder the other side pushed the more mandates they impose; the more things they take away such as exemptions, the more they force the people of this country to do – to bow to their will, the more resistance they will meet.”

He went on to cite a recent University of Chicago poll where 36% of the respondents were undecided when asked if they believed if vaccines can cause autism and whether the government is aware of the link. Also significant, 20% of respondents said they did believe vaccines can cause autism and the government is covering it up.

Dr. Wakefield then carefully cites the discrepancies between fact and the hypocritical, blatant lies printed in peer-reviewed medical journals about his work and research.

However what is most important in the transcript and video below is Dr. Wakefield’s approach in articulating a compelling answer to the question most of us have encountered: “If every kid gets vaccinated, why not every child?” (i.e., why doesn’t every child have an adverse reaction?)  He used the dangerous and horrific drug Thalidomide used for morning sickness in pregnancy as an example of the lack of universal outcomes in vaccine and drug injuries.

Why not every child? Or is it possible that it is every child – but the observed damage done is relative to the timing of the poisoning? Is the ASD spectrum actually a larger disease spectrum crossing all ages?

True to form, Dr. Wakefield was passionate in his presentation on The Legacy of Vaccine Injury. There is no doubt that this unsung hero of our time places the suffering of our children first and foremost in his quest not only for justice but for demanding truth and integrity within the scientific and medical communities. Brian Hooker, PhD who introduced Dr. Wakefield, stated “This is a man who deserves ‘knighthood’ not persecution.”

Readers are encouraged to view Dr. Wakefield’s video presentation below.
The following excerpt is from Dr. Wakefield’s AutismOne presentation on May 23, 2014.

Brian Hooker, PhD Introduces Dr. Andrew Wakefield at AutismOne

Dr. Brian Hooker: Good evening and welcome. My name is Brian Hooker and I have been given the honor of introducing Dr. Andrew Wakefield. Dr. Wakefield has been involved in the autism issue and autism research since 1995 when he embarked on the effort that led to his landmark 1998 Lancet paper regarding autistic inner colitis. Only now in 2014, 19 years later, has mainstream autism research even begun to elucidate what Dr. Wakefield discovered back then; while they ignore the obvious connection between vaccines and autism. Because of his commitment to the truth, Dr. Wakefield has suffered dearly. When many others have bowed to professional pressure, he has stood firm. Dr. Wakefield’s commitment to our children is unwavering and he deserves ‘knighthood’, not persecution. He along with Dr. Mark and David Geier are true heroes, who have made a deep and positive impact on society as a whole. I would like to introduce my good friend and colleague, Dr. Andy Wakefield.

Dr. Wakefield Honors Brian Hooker, PhD with the 6th Annual Dr. Andrew Wakefield Award for Courage in Medicine

Dr. Wakefield (to Brian Hooker): Before you go, stay where you are – Thank you, thank you it is always a pleasure to be here. Thank you very much. I have the pleasure of every year of acknowledging a hero in the field of science and autism, and this year is one of my favorite years – to Brian Hooker a great friend of mine, a person who has not only has been personally affected by autism – but through it all has stood completely firm, and who gone back time and time again; relentlessly to the CDC to force them ultimately to give him that data that he needed to show that they have lied, and lied, and lied again, and that will become very apparent in the forthcoming months. So, it is a great, great pleasure to give this to you Brian. I think I already know who I will make the award to next year; Teri I think I am going to need two awards… there’s a spoiler if there ever was one.

Dr. Wakefield: When you are disenfranchised as a scientist… I have been coming to this meeting since the very inception of AutismOne, and when you are not producing science year after year there is very little to talk about… It is very easy when you are conducting science to update that every year. Now, I’ve kind of run my course…it’s very important. When I played Rugby, I started pulling ham strings; the worst moment for me was when we were in a defensive position attacking my outside half – who’s kind of like the running back. Made a break with the ball, he should never have done it. This guy was with the England B team and he was very good in his day; this was not his day. And he made a break and he was dragged to his knees by two old-age pensioners, and as he fell to his knees I called for the ball to pass; in Rugby you pass backwards. He threw the ball over his head. I jumped up in the air and I stuck my thumb in my eye. And I fell to the ground. “Who did it Andy, who did it?” I said I did it. And the only good thing about that day was that my children were not on the touch line watching the game.

But someone was telling me to give up the game of Rugby, and the time has almost come for me to give up lecturing to AutismOne in the absence of… but, you haven’t seen the last of me. Having been disenfranchised as a scientist and a physician, what I now do is make movies with Polly Tommey’s daughter’s Media Channel. And our first movie which has been finished and was shot here last year in Chicago – not a happy story – but a very, very instructive story;  has just been accepted as an official selection at a major film festival. So we’re very, very pleased about that.

People come to filmmaking – the extremes in two ways: they come as undergraduates and postgraduates in film schools and they know a lot about making films; they now the history of cinematography; they know the techniques, they know the editing style –they know a lot. But they have no stories to tell. They have no experience in life.

The other extreme; people like me who have to learn about making films, but who have the most extraordinary stories to tell. Stories of of your own experiences. And it is a privilege to do that; it is a privilege to do that. So getting together with those young people who know how to make films and putting the narrative together with that we can tell some extraordinary stories. And I realized that as Joseph Stalin said “the death of one man is a tragedy; the death of a million is a statistic.” And when you tell sometimes the story of just one person – their suffering – their family suffering you can persuade the agnostic. And talking of the agnostic – what is the current state of this nation? We heard earlier from Claire Dwoskin that the government – sorry the pharmaceutical industry sometimes it is very difficult to distinguish; the pharmaceutical industry have spent 30 billion a year on promoting vaccines. They should have saved their money. Because they’ve failed; they’ve failed.

In a recent poll, U.S. adults who believe that vaccines cause autism rose from 18% in 2011 to 29% today; that’s 33% of all parents with children under 18. In polling terms; in an exit poll – that is a massive proportion of the American public. In a National Consumer League poll 76% believed that it was their prerogative to decide how and if their children should be vaccinated.

And the harder the other side pushed; the more mandates they impose; the more things they take away such as exemptions, the more they force the people of this country to do – to bow to their will,  the more resistance they will meet. And they don’t understand that. They do not get yet that they have wasted their time and their money.

Why? Why? They’ve paid a fortune to public relations companies; you could say if you were cynical that the public relations companies have wasted their money, but I would bet my bottom dollar that the public relations companies have not been told that they’ve been lied to. That the CDC and the drug industry as we’ve seen today, and as I’ll show you, have lied to them; have not been honest with them and therefore, whatever they put into it they are going to fail. Is there failure due to people like me? No. Its people like you who have experienced it first-hand – in your families, in your communities, in your streets and in your schools; so many children becoming damaged that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

It is your instinctive belief- from your own experience, that vaccines are causing not just a wave – a pandemic of neurodevelopmental disorders, but other immune-mediated diseases as well. And they don’t get that. They are furious that you do not comply; you do not believe them. They are living in a never, never land. And at that continued rate of growth of people who do not believe in the safety of vaccines – and there is not mention in these studies of the uncertain or undecided.

There was another poll that came out, from the University of Chicago, in fact, where they asked the question: “Do you believe that doctors think that vaccines cause autism and are covering it up?” Twenty percent of the respondents said “yes.”

The important number is that 36% didn’t know. And it’s that 36% that I am targeting in the films I am making. They’re not for you – you already know. I’d be honored if you watched them, but they are not for you – they are for the agnostic and for that reason, they must get out into the mainstream.

I don’t believe them and there are many reasons I don’t believe them; I read such nonsense in the scientific literature and one of them is a paper that was just published the other day, and it was a study funded by, I believe, by the Marcus Foundation. And it was looking; meta-analysis at the studies looking at gastrointestinal symptoms in children with autism. Coming to the conclusion – something that you knew 20 years ago is that they were highly prevalent in children on the autistic spectrum. And that in fact, they reflected an underlying disease. But this is why I don’t believe them; here is the opening; here is the introduction:

“A great amount of controversy has surrounded this topic since publication and public awareness in 1998 naming a new pathologic entity, autistic enterocolitis…”

Oh, right there – wrong. The term autistic enterocolitis did not come into being until several papers later. It was not mentioned in that Lancet paper…did they read it. They said that the autistic enterocolitis is responsible for developmental regression in 12 children. No, we didn’t. No, we didn’t;  we did not say that the bowel disease is responsible for the regression. These are such mundane errors in a peer-reviewed paper coming from a major academic institution in this country. No wonder, people do not believe it.

“Ultimately this research was retracted for several reasons including questionable research practices as found by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom.”

No mention there whatsoever, that the General Medical Council’s ruling in respect of the lead researcher, Professor Walker Smith; the lead clinician, Professor Walker Smith was completely thrown out by the first time this came before Justice Mitting in the English High Court.  And in effect, ruled that the General Medical Council were incompetent to hear and interpret evidence. No mention of that here.

“An association between the MMR vaccine and autism spectrum disorder has not been supported in subsequent research.”

It’s extremely misleading. There have been at least five papers by Dr. Singh and Professor O’Leary that support this association. But they receive no mention whatsoever.

“There is no evidence suggesting unique GI pathology in ASD.”

Here, are the papers suggesting there is a unique pathology. They show that the immune cells in the gut of children with autism are distinct from those with Crohn’s, and colitis and food allergy. They show that the cytokines produced by those immune cells in the gut and the blood of children with autism are distinct from those with Crohn’s, colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases. They show that the pattern of pathology is different. They show that the staining characteristics of the diseased bowel are different. They do not make the claim absolutely for a unique pathology, but they are most certainly evidence in support of that.

And here is the latest paper with which I was involved with; Steve Walker and Arthur Krigsman – peer-reviewed published – a major publication showing that the genes that are switched on and off in the gut biopsies of children with autism and bowel disease are distinct. Quite distinct from healthy controls; and show a pattern that is also distinct from Crohn’s disease and colitis.  Have these people not read this or are they simply biased?

They concluded that and that this is something that I think Emily Willingham, whoever she is… in a blog “Chilling Future Research;” I actually got the blame for the lack of any research on bowel disease and children with autism. Had I not been so impertinent as to report the parent’s stories, we may have made more progress in the interim.

“Previous controversy surrounding the MMR vaccine and proposed causal link between autism and infection of the GI tract probably deterred investigators from dedicating resources to examining GI function in this group while fostering uncertainty regarding the validity of this line of inquiry.”

This line of inquiry is initiated by the parental description of the symptoms in their child; the physical findings on examination; nothing to do with whether the vaccine drove it or not. Is this child sick; what ails them, what should I do as a clinician to make them better? And this kind of garbage is such an excuse for gutless pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists not to do their job.

This is utter, utter hypocrisy. And people did not do this. They were deterred from this line of inquiry because they feared what might happen to them. They put themselves before suffering children. And shame on them.

So here is the mantra. Here is the mantra. This is from Dr. Poland from the Mayo Clinic. “Vaccines and the ability…” – read this – at the beginning of so many papers that talk about vaccine safety. It’s almost as if they have to say this. Their compelled to say this (1) because their given a grant by the pharmaceutical industry, or (2) it won’t get published in a peer-reviewed journal unless you say something that appeases the vaccinology.

“Vaccines and the ability to prevent morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases has been one of the greatest public health success stories. On a global level it is one of the few cost-effective medical measures that result in universal benefit.”

Well, what if it’s not. What if that’s not true? What if the onset of these problems is so insidious so widespread – so unexpected rather like narcolepsy with flu vaccine – who ever expected that? You’re not just looking for things you know might occur – but you’re looking for things that are completely new – idiosyncratic – or are you? Depends whether you set up the surveillance systems or not.

But, what if it’s not?

I want to talk briefly about the legacy of vaccination; perceived benefits. This is one of the arguments you hear time and time again. Go to a cocktail party – I do not go to cocktail parties any longer, I do not get invited… But when I did, people would say ‘well, what about polio’? And that was it – that was the end of the conversation – ‘Well, what about polio’? This is not what we are talking about – What about polio? What about polio… It has nothing to do with polio so that’s not even an argument.

Why not every child? Now you must get asked this question… ‘Ok, well alright, maybe, but so every kid gets vaccines, so why not every child”… I’ve been thinking about this and I have been trying to articulate an argument that you might use that is compelling and going forward; universality.

We’ll talk about it in terms of ecological shift; changing patterns of immunity and infection and what the long-term implications are for interfering with the eco-system. Because nature abhors a vacuum and when you move the ecosystem just a fraction then it has a sort of chaos theory effect, beyond that. And you may not reap the reward or otherwise for many years; escaped mutants in vaccines and vaccine resistance, transmissibility, and vaccine failure.  I’ll also talk about what I call the ‘Valedictorians’ and where next.

So, why not every child? Let’s look at an analogy; lessons from Thalidomide. The FDA did one good thing; they’ve done several good things, but one good thing they did –years ago there was a lady, I don’t remember her name; who was in charge of the FDA… and she would not let the drug Thalidomide be licensed in this country. It’s a drug that came from Germany originally. And it was a drug that was ultimately used around the world, except in the States to treat morning sickness; to treat nausea in pregnancy. It was effective at doing that. The problem is it was a major teratogen. It caused major, major deformities in the children whose mother’s took it during pregnancy.

Now let’s look at the evolution of … or the evolving fetus in the womb from 3 to 38 months – the phase of – because here timing is everything. Why not every child? Remember, that is the key question. Why not every child? (Note: Photos are from Wikipedia – not Dr. Wakefield’s presentation. Dr. Wakefield’s PowerPoint slides showed a pregnancy timeline in addition to the photos of Thalidomide damage.)

If your mother takes this drug during this time period of upper limb development, – that is when you get problems with upper limb and development. If your mother takes the drug before that – or after it – you will not have problems with upper limb development, if this is the period for lower limb development. If your mother takes the drug during that period, then that is when you will have the problem. So the exposure does not necessarily produce a universal outcome.

Now, this is Phocomelia. These are children who were born… Phocomelia means seal-like disorder; seal-like abnormality.  And you can see these children had no rudimentary arms. And these were children whose mother’s took that drug during that critical window of upper limb development.

Here is the time during which the external and internal ear develops; a critical window of development. Now… and here is such an  ear abnormality in a child.

So exposure does not equate to a universal outcome. Exposures may result in very different outcomes. Timing is crucial. The interesting thing is that Thalidomide causes autism. Children with autism do not have limb abnormalities; they don’t have upper limb or lower limb abnormalities, but they do commonly, have ear abnormalities. What this has led to is now the appreciation that critical window of developing autism in the face of Thalidomide is the mother taking the drug between 20 and 24 days – 20 to 24 days – so it is critical to understand that timing in this case is everything. And I hope that makes it clear.

A wide-spread exposure and only 30% of those children whose mothers took the drug during the 20 to 24 days would actually develop autism. Why? We don’t know. But not everyone will develop it. And I hope that goes someway to using an argument that you might put forward to people who question this issue of universality. So it doesn’t apply to adverse reactions to vaccines just as it does not apply to protective vaccine responses. Not everybody responds to vaccines in the same way.  And this is very, very important. Because the belief has been of course, that one-size fits all – it does not and it never did.

Additionally in terms of timing and exposure, we have changed the natural pattern of exposure. We are giving exposure at different age; at different dose; at different root – we are not inhaling these anymore we are getting injected. It bypasses that part of immune system that has seen that virus over 1,000’s of years in terms of evolutionary history.  And now it’s seeing it in a completely different way.

Whoever thought that that would produce the same outcome? The root and concurrent exposure – we’re adding in more and more and more things that could interact; aluminum, thimerosal, other live viruses, viral excipients, viral contaminants, that we never knew were there; Porcine Circovirus; Types 1 & 2 in the Rotavirus vaccine; things that they never knew were there. So, no one knows how to determine the risk/benefit analysis. If they do, then they are lying. This whole argument about risk benefit analysis cannot be articulated unless you know the down side. Unless you know the risk – and there is no way of knowing that.”

____________

Dr. Wakefield’s presentation was informative, eye-opening – and his words need to be shared. The entire video presentation can be viewed below.

His response to the question, “Why not every child?” is compelling – and his conclusion as to why there is no universal outcome is thought-provoking. Timing of vaccination is as crucial to neuro-development as the timing of Thalidomide was to limb development. And in both cases, the timing led to a certain percentage of children developing autism. There is still so much to learn – to understand about the bio-chemical natures of our bodies that will ultimately affect the health outcomes of our children.

It is impossible as Dr. Wakefield stated, for parents to know the risk – the down side – the health outcome of their child prior to vaccination. It’s a game of Russian roulette. Neither parent nor child should be subjected to that type of crap shoot. Based on what Dr. Wakefield shared at AutismOne – there is no such thing as informed consent for vaccination.

By Dr. Mercola

Alzheimer’s disease, which affects an estimated 5.2 million Americans,1 is a devastating degenerative brain disease that develops slowly over time, and tends to be quite lethal in its final stages.

According to the latest data, the death toll from Alzheimer’s exceeds half a million Americans per year.2 This places Alzheimer’s in the top three killer diseases in the US, right behind heart disease and cancer.

There’s no conventional cure, and few if any successful medical treatments available once Alzheimer’s sets in. There is, however, compelling evidence indicating that your diet plays a significant role. This means you may have quite a bit of control when it comes to prevention.

In previous articles, I’ve discussed the links between high-carb, low-fat diets, and Alzheimer’s. Sugar, it turns out, is a major promoter of the disease. Some research even suggests that Alzheimer’s may be a form of “brain diabetes,” instigated by high sugar/fructose consumption.

The dietary links do not end there, however. More recently, investigators have raised the possibility that this severe form of dementia may be linked to eating meat from animals raised in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs)…

The Intriguing Connections Between Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow, and Chronic Wasting Disease

The key player here is an infectious protein called TDP-43. This protein has already been linked to a number of animal and human diseases, including:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Mad Cow disease
  • Chronic wasting disease, a transmissible neurological disease in deer and elk

Researchers have found that this protein may also play an important role in Alzheimer’s disease,3 as it is correlated with shrinkage of the hippocampus, thereby causing memory loss.

By examining the autopsied brains of more than 340 Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers found that TDP-43 was present in nearly 200 of them. As reported by MedicineNet.com:4

“The study is unlike some others because it looked at two types of patients who were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s after death — those who showed symptoms in life and those who didn’t.

Abnormal levels of TDP-43 were found in those who had the disease and were significantly affected by it… [T]he investigators found that those with abnormal levels of TDP-43 were 10 times more likely to have thinking problems such as memory loss at death than the other patients.

How could people have signs of Alzheimer’s, but not have symptoms? That’s not clear… But, maybe people who have [beta-amyloid] plaques and [tau] tangles don’t develop symptoms unless they also have TDP-43, the researchers hypothesized.” [Emphasis mine]

Feeding Animals Animal-Byproducts Is a Common CAFO Farming Technique, and It Can Be Deadly

The common denominator between Mad Cow and Chronic Wasting Disease5 is forcing natural herbivores to eat animal parts. Animal byproducts are in a variety of ways mixed into the feed given to CAFO livestock, and we have repeatedly seen the devastating effects of this practice.

Even in cases where omnivores, such as pigs, are fed byproducts of animals of their own kind, the practice still poses significant problems, as an infection originating in even a single sick animal can rapidly spread this way.

Over the past year, nearly 10 percent of the entire swine population in the US has been wiped out by a highly lethal virus traced back to pig’s blood used in piglet feed for example.

As explained by the Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance, the infectious agent that causes both Mad Cow and Chronic Wasting Disease is believed to be prions—an infectious type of protein—not bacteria or viruses. While some prions6 serve beneficial cell functions, others, acting like an infectious agent, are known to cause neurodegeneration. TDP-43 is in this latter category.

According to a University of Pennsylvania report titled, “The Saga of a Disease Protein,”7 TDP-43 reacts to oxidative stress, suggesting that antioxidant therapy might be helpful for disease prevention.

Mad Cow Disease Is a Man-Made Plague

Mad Cow Disease is another classic example of why the CAFO “cannibal” solution, i.e. feeding animal parts back to the same species of animal tends to be a bad idea. One of the primary ways Mad Cow Disease is transmitted is when cows are fed bone meal and waste products from other cattle infected with the disease.

As a result, it’s now illegal to feed beef-based products to cows. Alas, the beef industry circumvents this rule by using a feed product known as “chicken litter,” and that too can introduce this devastating disease into our food system.

Mad Cows Disease is still a factor when using chicken litter because this rendered down mix of chicken manure, dead chickens, and feathers, is also comprised of nearly one-third spilled chicken feed, which includes cow meat and bone meal used to feed the chickens—the very ingredients that are supposed to be off limits for cows.

So, any cow that eats chicken litter may also be consuming various cow byproducts–the very same feed products that spurred Mad Cow Disease in the first place.

Pigs, chickens, and turkeys can also be fed cattle byproducts, and current laws permit byproducts of those animals to be fed back to cattle.8 This is yet another loophole that can allow Mad Cow agents to infect healthy cattle—and you, should you end up eating any of these infected meats.

The CAFO-Alzheimer’s Connection

Eating CAFO meat carries a number of health risks, including the rare occurrence of Mad Cow disease. But could the infectious prions associated with Mad Cow, Chronic Wasting, and Alzheimer’s be spread via CAFO meats as well? Mad Cow Disease is a prion disease that can spread like wildfire in CAFOs. And there’s speculation that diseased cattle, which is ground up for feed to chickens and other non-bovine animals, may be retransmitting the disease by virtue of it passing on through the food chain, albeit indirectly.

When a foreign protein is introduced, your body will respond with inflammation. Chronic inflammation, we know, is a hallmark of most degenerative diseases. TDP-43 is one such foreign protein, but it certainly isn’t the only foreign protein you might ingest via CAFO foods.

CAFO livestock are also given feed consisting primarily of genetically engineered (GE) grains, and GE plants are also known to produce unfamiliar proteins—some of these proteins have in fact never existed in the human food chain prior to the introduction of GE foods. It’s no small wonder then that researchers keep finding that GE foods tend to be far more allergenic than non-GE foods.9

Now, when it comes to CAFO meats, be it chicken, pork, or beef, you’re being exposed to any number of foreign proteins—and TDP-43 might be one of them… Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), or the human version of Mad Cow, has a long incubation period, and few dementia-related deaths in the US are ever investigated. An infected person usually starts having symptoms in their 60s. As noted by the Centers for Food Safety,10 the symptoms are similar to Alzheimer’s, and include staggering, memory loss, impaired vision, and dementia.

Mad Cow Keeps Resurfacing…

In 2012, a California dairy cow was diagnosed with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE or Mad Cow Disease). According to the USDA, milk from cattle infected with Mad Cow is safe for human consumption, but dairy cows can also be processed into meat, and if they’re infected with BSE, such meat can cause vCJD when consumed.11 As noted by Center for Food Safety,12 which reported on the 2012 outbreak:

“Tissue from infected cows’ central nervous systems (including brain or spinal cord) is the most infectious part of a cow. Such tissue may be found in hot dogs, taco fillings, bologna and other products containing gelatin, and ground or chopped meat. People who eat contaminated beef products are at risk of contracting the human version of mad cow disease… The disease slowly eats holes in the brain over a matter of years, turning it sponge-like, and invariably results in death. There is no known cure, treatment, or vaccine for BSE diseases. The incubation period for ‘mad cow’ disease in cattle is thought to be approximately 5 years; it may be latent in humans for a decade or more before manifesting itself.”

This year, Mad Cow is rearing its ugly head again, this time claiming the life of a Texas man. He was the fourth American victim of the disease.13

Chronic Wasting Disease—Another Aspect of the Same Problem

Another type of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) disease is known as Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which is now rapidly spreading among deer and elk. As with Mad Cow, the disease is the result of domesticating wild animals, as discussed in the featured video. CWD now affects animals in 22 US states, and 68 game farms in Saskatchewan, Canada now have infected animals, imported via game farm animals from the US… CWD-infected animals shed the infectious prions in saliva and urine, starting around three months after being infected. They remain contagious for the remainder of their life, contaminating land and water as they go along.

According to some experts, the prions causing CWD are the most resistant disease agent currently known. As noted in the featured video, should CWD spread among humans the way it’s spreading through the deer population, HIV-Aids would seem like “a walk in the park” in comparison.

Game farms cater to hunters who are more or less guaranteed a kill, and the potential for CWD to spread to humans through consumption of these game animals is a serious concern. A recent paper in the journal Landes Bioscience14, 15 offers the following sobering assessment on the ability of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) to affect humans:

“We hypothesize that both BSE prions and CWD prions passaged through felines will seed human recPrP more efficiently than BSE or CWD from the original hosts, evidence that the new host will dampen the species barrier between humans and BSE or CWD. The new host effect is particularly relevant as we investigate potential means of trans-species transmission of prion disease.”

Losing Your Mind for the Sake of a Burger

The idea that neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and ALS may be spread via CAFO foods is not entirely new. A 2005 study16 published in the journal Medical Hypotheses, titled: “Thinking the unthinkable: Alzheimer’s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob and Mad Cow disease: the age-related reemergence of virulent, foodborne, bovine tuberculosis or losing your mind for the sake of a shake or burger,” states:

“In the opinion of experts, ample justification exists for considering a similar pathogenesis for Alzheimer’s, Creutzfeldt-Jakob and the other spongiform encephalopathies such as Mad Cow disease. In fact, Creutzfeldt-Jakob and Alzheimer’s often coexist and at this point are thought to differ merely by time-dependent physical changes. A recent study links up to 13 percent of all ‘Alzheimer’s’ victims as really having Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.” [Emphasis mine]

The researchers also note that bovine tuberculosis serves as a vector for human Mad Cow Disease. Bovine tuberculosis (caused by Mycobacterium bovis and M. avium-intracellulare or paratuberculosis) is one of the most prevalent disease threats in American CAFOs, and the researchers quote USDA data suggesting that anywhere from 20-40 percent of American dairy herds are infected at any given time! According to the authors:

“The health risk for milk tainted with M. bovis has been known for decades and there was a time not so long ago when ‘tuberculin-tested’ was printed on every milk container. Schliesser stated that meat from tuberculous animals may also constitute a significant risk of infection. At the turn of the 20th century 25 percent of the many US deaths from TB in adults were caused by M. bovis. Dairy products aside, when past and present meat consumption are factored in, there is three times the risk of developing Alzheimer’s in meat eaters as opposed to vegetarians.

The investigation into the causal trail for Creutzfeldt-Jakob, indistinguishable from Alzheimer’s except for its shorter, lethal course might have grown cold where it not for Roel’s and others who linked mad cow in cattle with M. bovis and related paratuberculosis on clinical, pathologic and epidemiological grounds. The southwest of the UK, the very cradle of British BSE and CJD outbreaks, saw an exponential increase in bovine tuberculosis just prior to its spongiform outbreaks. All of this brings up the unthinkable: that Alzheimer’s, Cruetzfeldt-Jackob, and Mad Cow Disease might just be caused by eating the meat or dairy in consumer products or feed.[Emphasis mine]

Are We Paying Far Too High a Price for Cheap Meat?

In my opinion, the answer to that question is yes. We are paying an exorbitantly high price for factory farmed foods. Some of the health effects associated with CAFO animal products are easier to estimate than others. In all likelihood, the news that Alzheimer’s disease, which now appears to be the third leading cause of death in the US, may be the result of a slower-acting form of Mad Cow or Chronic Wasting Disease is bound to come as a complete shock for most people. And yet the links between the diseases are quite compelling, and they all point to one main culprit: factory farming practices, which eliminate hygiene and replace animals’ natural diets with unnatural grain diets, into which animal byproducts are mixed in.

This “cannibal” solution, and the loopholes that end up permitting same-species cannibalism, has set in motion a disease-producing cycle that can only be stopped by putting an end to such unnatural food production practices. The bottom line is, an animal’s diet matters greatly. You cannot judge the benefits of the animal’s diet based on added weight gain or added milk production alone… There can be all sorts of unforeseen ramifications when you alter the natural course of nature, including never-before-seen diseases.

Organic, grass-fed and finished meat that is humanely raised and butchered is really about the only type of meat that is healthy to eat. By purchasing your meat from smaller farms that raise their animals in a humane fashion, according to organic principles, you’re promoting the proliferation of such farms, which in the end will not only help protect your health, it will ultimately benefit everyone, including the animals, by putting the brakes on farming practices that are actively sowing the seeds of degenerative diseases… The following organizations can help you locate farm-fresh foods in your local area that has been raised in a humane, sustainable manner:

US Soldiers Murdered

TLB Preface: Allen West has a mouthful to say, and says it in just a few minutes! This video is worth the slightly over three minutes of your time it will consume. TLB commends Mr. Agee and Western Journalism for this post.

By: B. Christopher Agee

After his brutal attack on four U.S. Marines in 2012, the victims’ families have looked to the Afghani justice system to punish Ainuddin Khudairaham.

Instead, the man who killed three and seriously injured a fourth has been tried as a juvenile and sentenced to a paltry seven and a half year prison term. Nearly two years ago, Khudairaham, who served as an aide to local law enforcement, brought a rifle with him to the gym at a Helmand Province forward operating base and opened fire. He killed Lance Cpl. Gregory Buckley Jr., Cpl. Richard Rivera Jr., and Staff Sgt. Soctt Dickinson during the violent encounter

allen-westRetired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Allen West weighed in on the light sentence during a recent Fox News interview, explaining that it will have far-reaching effects throughout the U.S. military.

“This is absolutely unconscionable,” he said, noting tests indicate that Khudairaham was potentially 18 years old when he committed the crime.

The shooter “should not have been tried as a juvenile,” West noted; “and as a matter of fact, the family of Lance Cpl. Buckley was told that he was not going to be tried as a juvenile.”

He called the sentencing “heinous,” suggesting thasuch a vicious criminal should be put to death.

“He should have been tried as an adult and he should have gotten the death penalty for doing what he did in cold blood,” West contended.

This injustice, he asserted, is symptomatic of widespread problems affecting America’s men and women in uniform.

“It’s very damaging,” he said, “because it’s not just this incident. But when you think about the fact that we’re handing out pink slips to our combat leaders who are still there in Afghanistan but we cannot hand out pink slips to any of the managers and officials that are in charge in the Veterans Administration and have the blood of our veterans on our hands.”

His outrage extends to the perceived inaction regarding the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups and the ongoing border crisis.

“We are allowing all of these individuals to include MS-13 [gang] members to come across our border but we can’t bring our own Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi across that border back home,” he lamented.

“This is a powder keg that is building up in the military community,” he noted, explaining that, if the Obama administration rewards accused Army deserter Bowe Bergdahl with back pay after his time in the custody of Afghanistan terrorists, the brewing tension might come to a boil.

“If we don’t do the right thing and charge Bowe Bergdahl as a deserter, which I think the administration is trying to sneak past us and classify him as a POW, [and] he gets $350,000 in taxpayer money, I think that might be the fuse,” he concluded.

Immune-Body-Disease-Bacteria

by: David Gutierrez

(NaturalNews) Naturally occurring clay may turn out to be one of the most effective ways to kill antibiotic-resistant superbugs, according to a study conducted by researchers from Arizona State University and published in the journal Environmental Geochemistry and Health.

“Minerals have long had a role in non-traditional medicine,” said Enriqueta Barrera of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Earth Sciences, which funded the study. “Yet there is often no understanding of the reaction between the minerals and the human body or agents that cause illness. This research explains the mechanism by which clay minerals interfere with the functioning of pathogenic bacteria.”

The key to stopping superbugs?

According to researcher Lynda Williams, clay minerals have been used in many traditional medical systems for thousands of years. Relatively recently, green clays found only in France and traditionally used in French mineral baths were proven to have antibacterial properties. Indeed, the green clays were used effectively to treats Mycobacterium ulcerans, a bacterial species that causes the skin disease known as Buruli ulcers.

“These clays,” Williams said, “demonstrated a unique ability to kill bacteria while promoting skin cell growth.”

Buruli ulcers begin as painful swelling of the skin but can eventually lead to large, open ulcers on the arms and legs. If untreated, the disease can lead to permanent deformity and even secondary infections that can cause death.

The French green clay was eventually depleted, however, and scientists have been searching for viable replacements. The value of antibacterial clay has become even higher as more and more pathogens continue to develop resistance to numerous forms of pharmaceutical antibiotics.

“As antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains emerge and pose increasing health risks,” Williams said, “new antibacterial agents are urgently needed.”

Indeed, multi-drug-resistant bacteria are now so prevalent and dangerous that they are considered a global health concern.

“This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future,” reads a 2014 World Health Organization report, “it’s happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.”

Clays kill MRSA, E. coli

The new study identifies and partially explains antibacterial properties in clays extracted from a volcanic deposit near Crater Lake, Oregon. The tests were conducted using the bacterial species Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis, which are common causes of human digestive and skin infections, respectively.

The researchers found that the clays flooded the bacterial cells with iron, overwhelming their ability to store the mineral and eventually killing them.

In addition, the researchers found that clays with antibacterial activity tend to be more acidic, thereby creating an environment more hostile to bacteria. This is particularly significant, since chronic, non-healing wounds tend to have a higher pH (i.e., less acidity and more alkalinity) than healthy skin. This same principle is used in many current wound treatments, such as acidified nitrate.

“Antibacterial clays can buffer wounds to a low [more acidic] pH,” Williams said. “The clays may shift the wound environment to a pH range that favors healing, while killing invading bacteria.”

Clays extracted from the Crater Lake region have also shown antibacterial activity against superbugs including methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-resistant E. coli (ESBL).

“To date,” Williams said, “the most effective antibacterial clays are those from the Oregon deposit.”

Even in the Oregon deposit, not all clays were equally potent. Apparently, the geologic history (and thus chemical composition) of the clays plays a key role. The researchers found that two blue clays from the deposit were very effective against E. coli and S. epidermidis, while a white clay was 56 percent effective against E. coli and 29 percent effective against S. epidermidis. A red clay had no effect.

cops-with-money

By: Bonnie Kristian,

Editorial comment: My take on this is that the government and banks are getting so paranoid about more and more people taking their money out of banks, that the law discussed here has been reincarnated to basically bully people out of draining their accounts and opting for safer solutions. What do you think?

Lucille Femine, Executive assistant for the TLB project

Here’s the article:

Suppose you decide to buy a used car from a guy on Craigslist. You’ve found the car you want, and you’re going to buy it outright. It’s only $4,000, and you decide to pay cash because it will be more convenient for both of you. So, on the day of the sale, you get the money and go to purchase the car.

On the way there, you roll through a stop sign. Bad luck—a cop saw you. He pulls you over, and while he’s writing up a ticket, catches a glimpse of your bank envelope in the passenger seat. Suddenly, he asks to search your car. You don’t have anything to hide, so what’s the harm, right?

The next thing you know, the officer is thumbing through your twenties. He grills you on why you’re carrying this much cash. It’s suspicious, he says. A check would have been easier if you’re really just buying a car.

“I’m going to have to confiscate this,” he finally concludes. You immediately protest: “On what charge? Am I being arrested? Can I call my lawyer?”

Nope. You’re not being arrested, and you can’t call your lawyer. In fact, you’re not being charged with any criminal activity.

This is called civil asset forfeiture—and you’re never going to see a dime of that money again.

“Civil asset forfeiture” sounds like some obscure legal thing. It’s not. In fact, it’s probably the biggest threat to private property you’ve never even heard of.

Here’s how it works: Civil asset forfeiture is basically a law which allows a police officer who finds you “suspicious” to just take your stuff.

Once your property has been confiscated, the burden of proof is on you, not the police, to show that you didn’t get it from any criminal activity. Even if you personally are cleared of all charges, that may not matter. As the Philadelphia City Paper reports, “Technically, it’s the property—not its owner—that’s being accused of criminality, which means the property can be subject to forfeiture whether or not its owner is ever convicted of a crime.”

In other words, they don’t have to charge you. They don’t have to present any evidence of illegal activity. In fact, you have no right to a lawyer and won’t get a day in court. In some jurisdictions, you actually have to pay thousands of dollars just to be able to contest the seizure.

And guess what? The police conveniently happen to consider large amounts of cash very suspicious indeed—but not too suspicious to dump it right into their own department coffers.

And we’re talking big money. “Between 2004 and 2009, Philadelphia collected some $36 million via civil forfeiture,” mainly from young, black men. Long Island police took in $31 million in a single year. The State of Virginia seized assets and cash worth more than $18 million in 2013 alone. In the same year, Michigan’s civil asset forfeiture profits topped $16 million, and the State of Texas took a whopping $106 million from its citizens.

For many, the forfeitures’ effects can be devastating. If our car buying hypothetical is difficult to believe, let me assure you that it’s not a creation of my imagination. It’s pretty much exactly what happened to Jennifer Boatright, a waitress from Texas who was buying a used car using cash she’d presumably saved up from tips.

Even though no evidence of drugs were found in her car, Boatright was told by police that she’d have to forfeit the cash she was carrying unless she wanted to be charged with money laundering and—even worse—see her two young children taken away and put in foster care. As any good mother would when faced with this kind of unthinkable extortion, she signed away her savings to keep her kids.

Stories like Boatright’s are sad and numerous:

When this “policing for profit” is legal, it gives police all the wrong incentives during their interactions with citizens.

And let’s be honest: “civil asset forfeiture” is too kind a term. This is theft.

new-pesticide-dollarvipDOTcom-400x285

By:Kimberlee Hertzer

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved the use of a new insecticide, DuPont’s cyantraniliprole (CTP), despite concerns about it getting into the nation’s food supply and the fact that it’s highly toxic to hundreds — perhaps even thousands — of endangered species.

To help protect the public and wildlife from the effects of CTP, three groups — the Center for Biological Diversity, the Center for Food Safety and Defenders of Wildlife – are suing the EPA in federal court.

According to the Center for Food Safety, the complaint filed by the groups stated that the insecticide “kills by causing unregulated activation of ryanodine receptors, which results in unregulated muscle contraction, paralysis, and death.”

The EPA’s own data showed CTP to be toxic, the Center for Food Safety said.

“Based on data showing the concentrations or amounts of CTP that cause direct effects, EPA classified the chemical as ‘slightly to moderately toxic to freshwater fish; slightly toxic to estuarine/marine fish; slightly to very highly toxic to freshwater invertebrates; moderately to highly toxic to estuarine/marine invertebrates, highly toxic to benthic invertebrates; highly to very highly toxic to terrestrial insects’ from acute exposures.”

Concerns About Cyantraniliprole

Here are a few of the other significant concerns:

1. CTP Will Get Into Our Food Supply.

Will this harmful pesticide get into our food supply? Yes. According to the Federal Register, CTP residue will be allowed on foods such as:

  • Almonds
  • Berries
  • Citrus
  • Leafy Vegetables
  • Onions

2. CTP Will Be Hard To Avoid.

You can change your eating habits, but it will be difficult to avoid CTP. After all, the EPA expects that its “use will be widespread.” So it will be used not only for agricultural purposes, but also for use on lawns, ornamental plants, fly baits, and even golf courses.

Want the best chemical-free, all-natural insecticide — for your garden AND home?

Sound familiar? It should.

Roundup was also deemed safe; however, we now know just how harmful it is. Likewise, CTP is a chemical that we should stop using now before the damage is done.

3. CTP Will Destroy The Bee Population.

The EPA is aware that CTP is dangerous to bees — but still approved it. Considering that the bee population is dwindling here in the U.S., perhaps the EPA should take a cue from Europe and stop using any pesticides that harm bees. And let’s be honest: We need them to grow food!  Beyond Pesticides says that in the near future, there may not be enough bees to pollinate crops due to the harmful effects of pesticides:

Beekeepers nationwide have experienced honey bee losses of over 40 percent over the 2012/2013 winter period —2013/2014 winter losses are likely to be released soon— with some beekeepers reporting losses of over 70 percent, far exceeding the normal rate of 10 to 15 percent. Some have even been driven out of business. Current estimates of the number of surviving hives in the U.S. show that these colonies may not be able to meet the future pollination demands of agricultural crops.

4. CTP Will Seep Into Our Water Supply.

The EPA will regulate the amount of CTP that is allowed on crops, but it hasn’t taken any steps to limit the amount of CTP that may get into the water supply.

“EPA’s unlawful and irresponsible approval ignored its own scientists’ warnings that strong protective measures are needed because this pesticide can drift into wildlife habitat,” said George Kimbrell, senior attorney for the Center for Food Safety. “The agency also failed to include measures to protect water quality from pesticide run-off despite the urging of local water management authorities.”

How To Protect Yourself And Your Family From Pesticides

For now, CTP is used in the United States, Canada, China and India. While it’s hard to avoid, there are some steps that you can take to protect yourself and your family from CTP and other harmful pesticides.

  • Grow your own food, and use organic pesticides and fertilizers on your lawn and garden.
  • Buy and eat organic fruits and vegetables.
  • Add detoxifying herbs and food to your diet, including: beets, turmeric, Milk Thistle, dandelion greens, Essiac Tea and cilantro.

“Herd” Mentality Explained – By

A research study sheds light on a behavior that is consistent among many species – that is, making decisions based upon the actions of others.

Scientists at the University of Leeds believe they may have found why humans flock like sheep and birds, subconsciously following a minority of individuals.

Researchers discovered that it takes a minority of just five per cent to influence a crowd’s direction – and that the other 95 per cent follow without realizing it.

The findings could have major implications for directing the flow of large crowds, in particular in disaster scenarios, where verbal communication may be difficult.

“There are many situations where this information could be used to good effect,” says Professor Jens Krause of the University’s Faculty of Biological Sciences.

“At one extreme, it could be used to inform emergency planning strategies and at the other, it could be useful in organizing pedestrian flow in busy areas.”

Professor Krause, with PhD student John Dyer, conducted a series of experiments where groups of people were asked to walk randomly around a large hall. Within the group, a select few received more detailed information about where to walk. Participants were not allowed to communicate with one another but had to stay within arms length of another person.

The findings show that in all cases, the ‘informed individuals’ were followed by others in the crowd, forming a self-organizing, snake-like structure.

“We’ve all been in situations where we get swept along by the crowd,” says Professor Krause. “But what’s interesting about this research is that our participants ended up making a consensus decision despite the fact that they weren’t allowed to talk or gesture to one another. In most cases the participants didn’t realize they were being led by others.”

Other experiments in the study used groups of different sizes, with different ratios of ‘informed individuals’. The research findings show that as the number of people in a crowd increases, the number of informed individuals decreases. In large crowds of 200 or more, five per cent of the group is enough to influence the direction in which it travels.

The research also looked at different scenarios for the location of the ‘informed individuals’ to determine whether where they were located had a bearing on the time it took for the crowd to follow.

“We initially started looking at consensus decision making in humans because we were interested in animal migration, particularly birds, where it can be difficult to identify the leaders of a flock,” says Professor Krause. “But it just goes to show that there are strong parallels between animal grouping behavior and human crowds.”

The paper relating to this research, entitled Consensus decision making in human crowds is published in the current issue of Animal Behavior Journal.
