Instagram offers fans an unrivalled glimpse into the opulent lives of the rich and famous, which is attained by allowing them to simply 'follow' them on the social media platform.

And while it may not come as a shock that certain celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift rank highly on the 'most followed' list, other contenders - such as three footballer players - may come as more of a surprise.

Single Ladies songstress Beyoncé, 33, takes the lead with a staggering 42.8 million individuals who follow her account - known for its candid photos of her day-to-day life and snaps of her outfits.

Closely behind with 42.3 million followers, is Kim Kardashian, the woman who actually released an entire book about 'selfies', a phenomenon which inundates her own Instagram account.

And it's not surprising that Kim Kardashian, 34, ranks in second place, as the socialite once held the position for most 'liked' Instagram image ever - a photo of her and husband, rapper Kanye West, 34, on their wedding day - until it was knocked off its top spot by sister Kendall Jenner.

2. Kim Kardashian, 34, is the second most followed celebrity on Instagram with 42.3 million followers

6. Justin Bieber has 35.8 million followers on Instagram - which features images of the star's luxurious lifestyle

In third place is Blank Space singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, 25, whose popularity is certainly boosted by her posse of celebrity friends and boyfriend, DJ Calvin Harris - all who regularly feature in her images.

Coming in at fourth and fifth place with relatively similar rankings are pop singers Ariana Grande, 22, and Selena Gomez, 23.

Justin Bieber, 21, is another unsurprising contender on the list, who came to fame at the age of 16 and has been in the spotlight ever since.

In total, five of the Kardashian and Jenner clan populate the list; in addition to Kim, there is also Kendall and Kylie, Khloe and Kourtney bringing up the rear in nineteenth place.

9. Rapper Nicki Minaj has a staggering 31.1 million followers on the social media platform

Noticeably, most of the celebrities on the list are performers or artists, with Nicki Minaj , Katy Perry, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus all on the top 20 list.

But more unexpected, is that the only actor in the list, is Furious 7 star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson - admired for his light-hearted on-screen persona and Instagram captions.

Also unusually on the list, are three professional footballers.

Tenth is Brazilian player Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, who plays for Barcelona; thirteenth is Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Real Madrid; and eighteenth on the list is Argentine Lionel Messi, who plays for Barcelona.

While the Instagram account of Neymar and Cristiano are unapologetically glamorous, explaining their high number of followers, Lionel Messi has a more understated account, filled with images of family and friends.
