FIRST LOOK: Jenna Coleman wields a huge machine gun as she joins forces with Game of Thrones' Maisie Williams in new teaser trailer for Doctor Who series 9

They are each TV heroines in their own right. 

But sci-fi fans will get a double-whammy of girl power in the new series of Doctor Who - as it stars both Jenna Coleman and Maisie Williams.

The young women share the screen in the new trailer for the ninth series of the BBC1 show, released Thursday, which will return in September.

Viewers of the show have already watched the minute-long teaser more than 50,000 times, which surely bodes well for BBC bosses.

It opens with the time-travelling hero, played by Peter Capaldi, flying through the universe in the famous tardis, while Jenna's character, Clara Oswald, declares: 'He hasn't got a plan yet - but he will have. And it'll be spectacular.' 

He's then seen battling a number of monsters, aided by both female stars.

At one point Clara picks up a flame-thrower to ward-off evil villains, but still manages to look the part with slicked-back hair and full make-up.

Likewise, Maisie - who's famed for her role in Game Of Thrones - is also slightly more glam than her other on-screen alter-ego.

She can be seen wearing a floor-length period costume dress, which she caps with a retro hairstyle.

Naturally, fans have responded passionately, with one declaring: 'The hype behind this series is unreal, this is probably going to be the best series since... last series!'.

Another added: 'So stoked to see Maisie Williams [in that] role.'

However, the show's main star, Capaldi, has already given fans an idea as to what they can expect from the much-anticipated new season.

He shared: 'Soaring through all of time and space, series nine sees the Doctor throw himself into life with a new hunger for adventure.

Meanwhile, Peter recently revealed he is desperate for Jenna Coleman to stay in Doctor Who. 

He said: 'Jenna continues to deliver a complex and funny performance that marks her out as one of the best companions ever.

'Will these be her last shows? I hope not.'
