A family affair! Dan Stevens reunites with cast of Downton Abbey to celebrate period drama's final series at special BAFTA event

The death of his Downton Abbey alter-ego, Matthew Crawley, left the family heartbroken at the end of season three.

But almost three years after Dan Stevens' devastating departure from the ITV1 period drama, he re-joined his former co-stars on Tuesday night for a special BAFTA ceremony at London's Richmond Theatre.

The 32-year-old actor - who played Lady Mary's beloved husband and heir to the estate - attended the special event to mark the show's global impact alongside other cast-members past and present.

Reuniting with the likes of Michelle Dockery and Laura Carmichael, Dan looked delighted as he walked down the red carpet - held to celebrate the show's sixth and final series.

The actor played Matthew, Lady Mary's distant relative, who despite wanting nothing to do with the sprawling Crawley estate of Downton Abbey slowly fell in love with Mary.

Dan, who headed to Hollywood after an appearance in the Christmas special of 2012, donned a suave tuxedo and white shirt for the bash, but added a rugged edge - that his character lacked - with smattering of stubble on his strong features.

And despite the rain, the British thespian looked delighted to be back in the ranks of the Crawleys, as his former co-stars put their best foot forward to celebrate the end of Julian Fellowes' Yorkshire-based drama.

His on-screen wife Michelle Dockery looked the picture of aristocratic elegance as she donned a striking floor-length, black and white dress.

The 33-year-old actress completed her looked by styling her brunette tresses in soft waves - reminiscent of the glamour of the 1920s, when the show is set - and carried a gold clutch.

Michelle's on-screen sister - and one-time rival in the drama for Matthew's affections - Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, joined her on the red carpet in a summery floral maxi-dress.

Dan, Michelle and Laura all shot to global fame for their parts in Downton Abbey, created in 2010 by Lord Fellowes, which follows the trials and tribulations of the aristocratic Crawley family as they adapt to the changing world at the start of the 20th Century.

With the show's sixth and final series having wrapped-up filming earlier this summer, the cast gathered in the leafy climbs of South-West London to accept an award for their mammoth achievements with the show.

Gathering on-stage around Lord Fellowes, the past and present members of the cast looked delighted to be honoured for their success in a show that has captured the imagination of millions around the world.

Winning a plethora of awards including a BAFTA, three Golden Globes and three National Television Awards, the show has been screened in more than 100 countries globally.

Dan left the show in 2012, with his character Matthew meeting a shocking-end after surviving trench warfare in The Great War finally wooing the ever-uncertain and cool Lady Mary.

Since leaving the fictional Yorkshire estate of Downton Abbey, Dan has kept his distance from the show that launched him, and it seems his tactic has been successful.

With three movies in post-production, Dan is set to hit the big-screen in a number of titles in the next 24 months.

The most anticipated of his next roles is as the Beast opposite Emma Watson in the live-action adaptation of Disney's famous fairy-tale romance, Beauty And The Beast - due to hit screens in early 2017.

Meanwhile, rumours continue to swirl about the possibility of a Downton Abbey film.

While Lord Fellowes has admitted he would like to see this happen, it has yet to be confirmed as a certain.

Talking at the Chalke Valley History Festival earlier this year, the show's creator simply said: 'At the moment there isn't [a movie planned] but you never know.

'Or a stage show or anything else. So I think to have them all killed in a bus [in the finale] would be a mistake.'
