What a pest! Armies of biting ants infest vacationers' cars at airport garage

  • Kristin Bordeaux found her SUV crawling with thousands of ants after parking it at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina
  • 'They were crawling on us, they were crawling on the twins,' said the mom
  • Martha Hall returned from vacation to find her car was similarly overrun with biting bugs
  • Airport says it is fighting ant infestation with traps and pesticides
  • Airport's garage had problem with ants last year too

One family's vacation ended with an ant infestation.

The Bordeaux family of Charlotte, North Carolina were in for a creepy surprise when they picked up their SUV at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after 10 days away in Chicago.

'One of my twins starting telling me there were ants,' Kristin Bordeaux told WCNC-TV. 'I looked down into the console. The more and more we looked they were everywhere. They were crawling on us, they were crawling on the twins, they were crawling on our bags.'

The family estimates there were 'thousands' of ants. Nor were the creepy crawlers minding their own business - Bordeaux says they were biting. Bordeaux called the spindly-legged visitors 'gross and bizarre.'

Kristin's husband, Mark, spent two hours de-infesting the car with a vacuum, bug spray, and ant traps - but to no avail. Two days later, the ants had taken up residence in deep crevices of the car around the door and door boards.

Airport officials reportedly refunded the family's parking fees and offered to pick up the cleaning costs.

They also released a statement saying : 'Charlotte Douglas International Airport routinely monitors and treats parking areas. We have standard protocols in place to address these types of issues and encourage our customers to contact the Airport. Earlier today, we were contacted by Mr. Bordeaux and are working with him to resolve his concerns.'

Ants are apparently quite drawn to the airport - officials were reportedly battling a red ant infestation there in 2014, according to WSOC-TV.

And the Bordeaux family isn't the only one to play host to an army of ants - WSOC-TV reports that several families, including Martha Hall and her husband, were also overrun with ants when they picked up their cars at the airport.

Hall's ant-mare began when she got a lap full of ants after sitting in her car after returning from vacation on Saturday.

Hall says the entirety of her car, including the interior (pictured) and even exterior, was crawling with ants

'I looked down and saw an ant and thought, 'Well, that’s strange.' I turned and looked at the console of my car and there was this whole trail of ants.'

Hall too said the ants were biters.

'We got out. They were streaming all through the interior of the car and all over the exterior of the car.'

The airport said the problem was with curbside valet service and they had halted that service - however, Hall was parked in the daily lot area and the Bordeaux in the daily deck parking.

Hall added that she would be too bugged out to use the airport again, saying: 'I don't plan to park there again anytime soon.'

CLT-Douglas airport adds that its landscaper is using pesticides and ant traps to battle the problem.
