A long way from Hogwarts! Daniel Radcliffe sports a quirky costume and cuts on his face as he films first scenes for new movie Swiss Army Man

He's taken on many a varied role to distance himself from his days as Harry Potter.

And Daniel Radcliffe couldn't have looked further from his time as a Hogwarts student, when he was spotted on-set filming his latest project Swiss Army Man, in California, for the first time last week.

The 26-year-old actor was seen in full-costume - a bizarre assortment - alongside co-star Paul Dano, as filming for the Indie comedy/drama got underway on location in Malibu.

Daniel, who first shot to fame in the movie adaption of J.K. Rowling's best-selling books, cut a dishevelled and dirty figure with visible prosthetic cuts on his face as work on the film got underway.

While little is known about the details of the plot, Deadline reports that Swiss Army Man sees Daniel take on the role of Cliff, a hopeless man stranded in the wilderness who befriends a dead body and takes off on a surreal journey to make it back to his home.

Donning a tattered checked jacket, crumpled shirt and tie and a filthy pair of chinos, the Horns star certainly looked the part.

But in keeping with the films surreal and comedic tones Daniel sported a red-velvet super hero mask pushed-up over his brow, and a flimsy cardboard breastplate and gauntlets - presumably some protective gear for his travels with his dead companion.

Sat in front of a ramshackle hut, Daniel's character cut a bizarre and melancholy figure as he rests on a battered mattress and pile of mouldy covers.

With a simple smile on his grime-covered face, Daniel appeared to be shooting the opening scenes of the film before Cliff finds the cadaver that becomes his best-friend.

And while the film may be a long way from the sprawling set of the Harry Potter films, the actor couldn't have appeared happier taking on his new quirky role.

Walking around in between takes in the leafy location, the Manhattan-based star shared a joke with the crew and his co-star Paul Dano - who appeared in an equally bizarre costume.

Presumably about to join Daniel for a take, the American actor - who is best known for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and Ruby Sparks (2012) - was having some final touches made to his character's wardrobe.

Wearing a polka dot poncho and a messy orange wig, the tall actor cut a truly bizarre figure as his character, Kent.

The film, directed by collaborative duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Schienert, also stars up-and-coming actress Mary Elizabeth Cooper as Amber.

The Indie film is the latest in a series of vast and varying projects that Daniel has signed-up to since he left the role of Harry Potter behind in 2011.

In 2013 he starred alongside Mad Men star John Hamm in the comedy-drama A Young Doctor's Notebook, while he took on a darker and edgier role as Arthur Kipps in the big-screen version of The Woman In Black (2012).

Daniel will next hit the silver-screen in December, when he stars alongside James McAvoy in a new spin on Mary Shelley's classic Gothic tale, Frankenstein.

Victor Frankenstein sees Daniel playing the lead role of the mad doctor's assistant Igor in the film which tells the famous tale from the twisted assistant's perspective.

The next big breakthrough? In 2013 he starred alongside Mad Men star John Hamm in A Young Doctor's Notebook, while he took on a darker role as Arthur Kipps in the film adaptation of The Woman In Black (2012)
