Truly outrageous! New trailer for Jem And The Holograms unveils Synergy as it finally hints at the fantastical elements of the 80s cartoon

Jem is truly, truly, truly outrageous - and the first trailer was anything but that.

But the second trailer for the upcoming film version has finally hinted at some of the fantastical elements that made the 80s cartoon so popular.

The new clip introduces Synergy, which in the movie appears to be a robot built by the singer's deceased father, capable of projecting holograms.

In the cartoon, Synergy was a sentient computer programme who projected Jem's rock star appearance - as well as the audio visual special effects for the band's performances - via her micro-projector earrings.

'What are you working on?' an off-camera young Jerrica asks her dad as the trailer opens, in a home video recorded all the way back in 1999.

'Well I'm working on my greatest creation,' he tells her, revealing it is now fan-testingly stylized as '51n3rg.y. 'I promise you'll see it when you're a little older, okay?'

We then get another montage briskly revealing the overall plot to the film: singer Jerrica Benton - played by Aubrey Peeples - has a track uploaded to YouTube and becomes an internet sensation.

'Oh my God, you're Internet famous!' her little sister tells her. 'That's like the second best thing to being actually famous!'

After being re-introduced to Juliette Lewis' character, we see Jem and her band the Holograms performing some rocking gigs

'Who is Jem? We're getting reports that's the number one trending topic on Twitter,' announces a news reader, who apparently can't check what's trending on Twitter for himself.

We then get a look at the all new Synergy - who looks a rolling version of EVE from WALL-E - whose holographic ability appears to be limited to replaying home videos and relaying morals from her late dad.

Fans of the original were unsettled when the first trailer released in May appeared to be a straightforward 'singer gets discovered' movie, with none of the off-the-wall sci-fi elements or dastardly plots.

Even Lewis who plays the 'evil' record company exec Erica Raymond - a female version of one of the cartoon's main antagonist Eric Raymond - just appears to want Jem to dump her bandmates for a shot at an even more successful solo career... which sounds like something any normal music industry head might do.

While still evidently much more grounded than the cartoon, the second trailer at least shows Jem operating Synergy using her earrings.

Still no sign of the evil rival band The Misfits though.

Jem And The Holograms is scheduled for release on October 23, 2015.
