Before Cara Delevingne, models looked groomed, glamorous and gorgeous at all times.

They certainly didn't stick their tongue out in pictures, gurn in selfies, make themselves look ridiculous in outifts like giant hot dog costumes, and share playful backstage photos of themselves with the world.

As the British supermodel celebrates her 23rd birthday, here is FEMAIL's pick of the high spirited star's silliest snaps, most outrageous moments and her most humorous television appearances...

1. Cara crossed her eyes, shoved a strawberry on her mouth and clutched a heart-shaped balloon over her bikini area to celebrate reaching 10 million followers on Instagram (which she also wrote on her stomach)

2. The two youths looking on don't seem to realise there is a supermodel in front of them dressed up as a hot dog - complete with mustard

3. Cara posted a picture of her managing to clutch two birds, one in front of each bosom, while balancing another one on her head

But Cara, who turns 23 today, turned that image on its head becoming as famous for her personality as her supermodel looks - and she refuses to be seen to take her industry, or her fame, seriously.

For every picture of the slender blonde smouldering for the camera, there are two of her pulling a funny face.

Not only that, she is far more likely to be pictured without make-up and with unbrushed hair than with a full-on glam look.

Her Instagram feed reflects the zanier part of her personality, and includes snaps of Cara as a child playing the clown, dressed up in bizarre onesies or pulling odd poses with some strange props.

4. Cara puts a creepy plastic hand to good use taking a hilarious selfie of it stuck in her ear and then positioned on her forehead as though growing out of her face

5. Cara's deadpan demeanour and ironic tone on US TV went down like a lead balloon with the presenters

6. After her US TV interview in which presenters suggested she was too busy to read Paper Towns, Cara posted this witty riposte with the caption, 'I just found this book! It's awesome!'

In 2013, she told i-D that she mainly plays the fool to keep everybody's spirits up.

Speaking about the fun-loving character she portrays, she commented: 'Everyone, including me, has off days. But I try my best to keep happy the way everyone around me does, and to keep up morale.

'Of course, I’m only human. I try and be real and keep my life real. I don’t expect anyone to think I’m always perfect because I’m not. No one is.'

7. Cara posted a snap of her as a child on Instagram feeding a camel in a desert while wearing a patterned hat designed to protect her neck. Who knew then that high fashion would beckon?

8. At a press conference for Paper towns in June, Cara was given an ugly T-shirt in a penis shaped bag and she insisted on wearing it for the rest of the event

10. Cara livens up a De Grisogono Divine Dinner Party in Cannes in May by sticking her name setting to her forehead disregarding her Grecian gown and emerald necklace

Her happy-go-lucky nature has made her one of the darlings of the fashion world, with designers and models lining up to heap their praise on her.

Last year, the notoriously hard-to-please Karl Lagerfeld said of her: 'She's a character. She's the Charlie Chaplin of the fashion world.

'She is kind of genius, like a character out of a silent movie.

11. Cara and designer Jonathan Saunders ended up in an embrace on the carpet during the GQ Men of the Year awards in 2014

12. The Brit model and Kendall Jenner dress up as Mario Brothers, in a picture Cara captioned, 'Mario and Luigi minus one moustache' - she stuck her tongue out for good measure

'Girls admire her like they used to Kate Moss. They all want to be as free as her.'

The photographer Mario Testino echoed these sentiments in an interview with Fashionista magazine in 2012, when he said: 'She's fabulous, no? She's great, I work with her on all the Burberry ads.

'She's such fun. She is like the new Kate in a way, if you think of her personality and energy and attitude.'

15. Once again Cara brings the fun backstage and takes a picture of model Kai Newman posing in cosy dressing gowns with matching teddy bear ears - and her signature silly face

Part of the attraction comes down to her not taking the fashion world she's a part of too seriously.

In fact, she told Xpose magazine last year: 'I know a lot of people who aren't in the fashion industry who care about fashion a lot more than I do.

'I like clothes, just not all the time. I prefer to be naked. What can I say?'

It isn't just the fashion world who have fallen in love with her wit either - the general public have become obsessed with the model's extrovert nature.

Her Instagram page has more than 17 million followers, with every post instantly liked by tens of thousands of fans.

But that doesn't mean everyone gets her sense of humour.

Last month, the model-turned-actress was interviewed on US TV show Good Day Sacramento for her new movie Paper Towns, in which she plays the lead female Margo.

But the interview ended up being cut short after the show’s presenters accused Cara of being ‘irritated’, ‘tired’ and not showing much ‘oomph’ during the chat.

However, defending her manner on the morning TV show, Cara has insisted she wasn’t tired, wasn’t grumpy and wasn’t fed up with all of the press for her film – she was just exercising her good old British sense of humour.

She later tweeted: 'Some people just don't understand sarcasm or the British sense of humour.'
