Robin Thicke credits his five-year-old son with helping him regain perspective after his divorce from Paula Patton

Following his highly publicized divorce from Paula Patton, Robin Thicke needed perspective to get himself back on-track.

The 38-year-old singer spoke about achieving that on Wednesday's episode of Good Morning America and credited his five-year-old son, Julian - along with other family members - as helping.

'I took some time off to just be with my son and my family,' he explained. 'It helps you gain perspective on what's important in life.'

Robin pointed out that he had been performing relentlessly for more than two decades and needed some time off.

'I started song-writing and producing and singing professionally when I was 16, and I never really stopped until last year,' Robin said.

He and Paula had had a relationship of 20 years - including a nine-year marriage - when the couple separated in 2014.

Paula later filed for divorce, which was finalized on March 20, 2015.

Robin took the split hard, publicly declaring his intention to win back his wife's affection and even naming his 2014 album Paula after her.

All of that seems to have changed more recently, with Robin going on Good Morning America to promote music from his upcoming Morning Sun album.

'Morning Sun is about fresh starts, new beginnings, and the heralding of a new day,' the singer noted.

This new direction came about thanks to time spent with Julian and with Robin's parents, actors Alan Thicke and Gloria Loring, both 68.

He even took Julian and Gloria on a family vacation together in recent months.

'I just finally took a few months off or more and spent a lot of time with my parents, talking to them and getting their advice,' explained Robin.

Also helping Robin to get past his divorce has been the singer's new girlfriend, 20-year-old April Love Geary.

Rumours have indicated that the couple might soon be heading for an engagement of their own.

For now, however, Robin seemed focused on his music - he and his band performed a new single, Back Together, on Good Morning America.

'It's more about getting yourself back together,' Robin said of the tune's meaning.
