Sharp-suited Robert Pattinson turns brooding photographer in the first trailer for James Dean biopic Life

It's been some time since Robert Pattinson has been on the big screen - but his latest, hotly-anticipated project seems like it was worth the wait.

The 29-year-old is captured for the first time as Life Magazine photojournalist Dennis Stock as the trailer for James Dean biopic Life gives a hint as to how the late 1950s story of an icon played out.

Former Twilight actor Rob turns brooding photographer and uses his piercing eyes and Hollywood heartthob image to steal just a pinch of the spotlight from the central muse James, played by Amazing Spider-man's Dane DeHaan.

In the film - based on the true story - R-Pattz plays the professional photographer who noticed an awkwardness and a unique quality about unknown actor James and promised to make him famous.

The trailer depicts James' blossoming friendship with Dennis after the artist pitches a photo essay to the magazine on the budding actor.

Rob's classic looks are certainly well-suited to the era and he's seen sporting a side-swept hairstyle and a sharp suit throughout.

Central lead Dane, meanwhile, is given a certain edge - no doubt representing something of what Dennis saw in the 'kid' who went down in history with memorable Rebel Without A Cause and East Of Eden performances.

In the trailer, the pair meet at a party in 1953 - as they did in real life - and take a road trip to complete the interview - and it's here that they forge a close bond.

They visit Hollywood to New York as well as the most telling part of the journey at 'Jimmy's' home town of Fairmount, Indiana over a three-month stretch as he tried to learn about the experiences that shaped the actor.

James tragically died at age 24, having only completed three films but this time his story is told through the eyes of a man who captured the most iconic stills of his career.

The film, written by Luke Davis, largely follows the same precipices as the book Beautiful Enigma: LIFE With James Dean, which was written by Dennis and published in 2005.

Life also stars Joel Edgerton, Ben Kingsley and Kristen Hager and is set for release this September.
