And now, almost 20 years after the series went off the air in 1996, the 46-year-old is looking to capitalize on Hollywood's revival craze by rebooting the series.

The original series revolved around wise-cracking Philadelphia teen Will - played by Smith - being sent to live with his aunt and uncle - the sophisticated Banks family - in Bel-Air, California, and the misadventures that ensued when the differing personalities collided.

TV Line noted that according to multiple sources, the reboot would 'put a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series.'

The publication also reported that a pitch is currently being finalized, after which Overbrook will begin shopping it around.

Will would serve as executive producer on the project, alongside Overbrook producing partners James Lassiter, Caleeb Pinkett, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The reboot was brought up to NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt - as the show originally aired on NBC - at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday.

Robert said the network was not involved with the project, but that he would 'be happy to talk to Will [Smith] about it.'

Will became a household name after starring on the series, which ran for six seasons on NBC, from 1990 to 1996.

Prior to appearing on the show Will was an emcee, and one part of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince.

DJ Jazzy Jeff - real name Jeffrey A. Townes - starred alongside Will on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as his best friend Jazz.

The series also starred Tatyana Ali, Alfonso Ribeiro, and James Avery, and had a myriad of memorable guest stars, such as Don Cheadle, Queen Latifah, and Tyra Banks.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is the latest Nineties sitcom announced to make a comeback this year, with other notable reboots including Full House, Coach, The X-Files, and Twin Peaks.
