'He used the basketball court as a closet': Luther Vandross' Connecticut estate on the market for $9m... a decade after his untimely death

A Connecticut estate, formerly owned by Luther Vandross, has hit the market at $8.99 million.

Located in quiet and serene town of Greenwich, the lavish property lies on 14.83 acres and features seven bedrooms and eight baths.

Before the singer's untimely death in 2005 at age 54, Vandross had lived at the house and, as realtor Gila Lewis explained: 'He used the basketball court as a closet.'

Also featured at the expansive estate is a pool, pool house, tennis court and more.

The decoration, both interior and exterior, exudes East Coast old money.

Vast lawns, towering chimneys, curved staircases, silver chandeliers, checkered flooring – the property is both ample and elegant.

The third floor was originally converted into a basketball court and then ultimately used by Vandross to store his extensive wardrobe.

'He was very dapper,' said Lewis, the listing broker from Houlihan Lawrence Real Estate.

Having worked herself in the music industry, Lewis described herself as a 'huge Vandross fan.'

Dubbed 'The Velvet Voice,' Luther Vandervoss was one of music's most coveted icons before he died at age 54 of a heart attack.

He's known for his solo RnB and soul hits but also for working with a wide array of artists – from Mariah Carey to Beyonce, David Bowie to Busta Rhymes.

'It was intimidating to stand next to him,' Mariah Carey told Rolling Stone.

Devoted to his career, the singer never married and never had any children.

Vandross suffered from multiple health issues starting with a stroke in 2003 that left him struggling to speak and in a wheelchair.

Nonetheless the singer appeared the following year at the 2004 Grammys to accept his Song of the Year award for Dance With My Father.

On July 1, 2005 Vandross died of a heart attack at age 54.
