Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios is once again in hot water after brutally trash-talking his Swiss opponent during a second-round clash at the Montreal Masters.

In a remark picked up by a courtside microphone, Kyrgios told third-seeded Stan Wawrinka that a teenage Australian player, Thanasi Kokkinakis, slept with his girlfriend.

'Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend,' he said, midway through the second set. 'Sorry to tell you that, mate'.

Wawrinka, the reigning Australian and French Open champion, condemned the remarks in a fiery Twitter spree on Thursday evening.

'So disappointing to see a fellow athlete and colleague be so disrespectful in a way could never even imagine,' Wawrinka fumed.

'To [stoop] so low is not only unacceptable but also beyond belief'.

Kyrgios, 20, is believed to have been referring to 19-year-old Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic.

Vekic has been romantically to Wawrinka, who divorced his wife, Ilham, earlier this year.

Oblivious to the growing controversy outside the court, Kyrgios went on to trump Wawrinka 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 4-0 with the Swiss superstar retiring due to a back injury in the final set.

Asked afterwards why he made the staggering remark, he told a Canadian television station: 'He was getting a bit lippy with me.

'Kind of in the heat of the moment. I don't know. I just said it.'

It's just the latest controversy surrounding Kyrgios, whose on-court tantrums and misbehaviour has drawn the ire of Australian tennis officials and fans alike.

At Wimbledon in June, he screamed out that an umpire was 'dirty scum'.

A week later, he slammed his racquet into the ground with such force it bounced back up into the crowd.

During the competition's fourth round, he was forced to deny 'tanking' after accusations he did not even try to return serve.

SLEDGING, TANTRUMS AND THOSE BRIGHT PINK HEADPHONES: HOW NICK KYRGIOS HAS FAST BECOME THE BIGGEST BRAT ON THE TENNIS CIRCUIT

Nick Kyrgios has fast become the biggest brat on the tennis circuit with his John McEnroe-like outbursts on court and his eccentricity off it.

Controversy has followed Kyrgios around since his 2014 breakthrough when he knocked Rafael Nadal out of Wimbledon.

At this year's tournament in June, he screamed out that an umpire was 'dirty scum', slammed his racquet into the ground with such force it bounced back up into the crowd and was even accused of deliberately throwing a match.

The 20-year-old was famously warned by former Australian champion Pat Rafter to stop interacting with the crowd and remain focused on the game.

When asked if he was conscious of how much he was swearing, Kyrgios put his outbursts down to grand slam pressure and a headache caused by an ongoing sinus infection.

Off the court, controversy is also never far away.

He was been criticised for wearing his favourite bright pink headphones wherever he goes and clashed with officials for climbing up a wall to watch fellow Aussies Lleyton Hewitt and Thanasi Kokkinakis playing in a doubles match.

However, he did have the support of most Australians when swimming great Dawn Fraser suggested he 'go back to where (his) parents came from'.

He was born in Australia to a Greek father and Malaysian mother. Fraser later apologised.

When asked afterwards why he made the comment, Kyrgios replied: 'He was getting a bit lippy with me'

Tennis officials were said to be thrilled when another scrappy Australian tennis champion, former world no. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, took him under his wing this week.

Hewitt, famous for screaming 'come on!' on the court, agreed to take on a mentoring role with Kyrgios starting earlier this week.

Hewitt and Kyrgios are also playing doubles together in Montreal.

THE CROATIAN STARLET, 19, HAILED AS THE NEXT MARIA SHARAPOVA

Croatian tennis starlet Donna Vekic has even been hailed as the next Maria Sharapova thanks to her stunning looks and tennis prowess.

The 19-year-old first drew the comparisons after winning the Croatian national junior championships in 2011 and she has gone on to peak at world no. 310 in the doubles rankings in February this year.

But she has made clear that she wants to make a name for herself in her own right.

She has said: 'It's a compliment but I want to be Donna Vekic, not the next Maria Sharapova, or the next Caroline Wozniacki, even though I look like them a little bit.'

When Donna was just nine, she followed the path to the Bollettieri Academy in Florida that Maria and so many other prodigies in the women’s game have trodden.

But for the past few years she has been guided to the top in Britain.

Her mentor was David Felgate, the man who coached Tim Henman into the Wimbledon semi-finals.

She has been romantically to Stan Wawrinka in recent months and is often seen cheering the Swiss star on from the stands.
