'Everyone was competing against each other': Wife of retired fast bowler Nathan Bracken Haley lifts lid on feuding world of Australia's cricket WAGS as she compares it to a 'vipers' nest'

The wife of retired fast bowler Nathan Bracken has exposed what life was really like as one of Australia's cricket WAGS, comparing the group of wives and girlfriends to a 'vipers' nest'.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, former WAG Haley Bracken says that behind the glossy facade of friendship, lies simmering tensions and 'snide remarks'.

The former Dancing With The Stars contestant, whose husband has recently settled a legal battle with Cricket Australia after he had a career-ending knee injury, blames the association for 'pitting players against one another'.

'Everyone has this misconception the cricket team is so close and it is a brotherhood. Nothing could be further from the truth,' she says in the interview.

Bracken alleges that the association intentionally incites competitiveness between the players, which in turn has a knock on effect between the overprotective girlfriends and wives.

'It was the snide remarks, the little quips - just the whole feeling of the place because every was competing against each other.'

Tensions reach boiling point when one player gets sidelined, says Bracken, whose husband retired from the game in 2011 and has endured a protracted legal battle with Cricket Australia since.

Refusing to name names, Bracken did reveal that some of the wives provided salvation in a sea of simmering tension, saying of Ricky Ponton's wife Rianna '[she would] take the new girls in and show them the ropes'.

However, she did reveal that Michael Clarke's ex fiancee Lara Bingle was a 'target', before she was replaced by Kyly Boldy, now Clarke.

Haley's comments come a week after the current WAGs have come under fire for Australia's Ashes defeat, with many deeming a distraction on the tour.

A row was sparked after Australia's crushing defeat at Nottingham's Trent Bridge and Michael Clarke's subsequent resignation.

However, Australia's coach Darren Lehmann has since defended the wives and girlfriends of the players stressing that their presence is crucial to the cricketers.

He said in his column on cricket.com.au: 'As a group, we have always placed a huge importance on family and while we're happy to cop criticism for the way we bat, bowl, field or prepare I believe it's unfair to suggest having families with us as a reason for our on-field efforts.

'Some of the guys in our squad have schedules that have meant they've been at home for a total of three or four days since the Boxing Day Test last December - less than a week in more than seven months.'

Seven years ago, Haley's husband Nathan was the world’s number one bowler in one day international cricket and was on his way to becoming a cricket legend.

But he was left with a permanent disability after an injury he suffered playing for Australia and launched an exhausting five year legal battle against Cricket Australia for compensation for medical bills.
