I f you don’t believe that Wings was a flimsy excuse for a band, take a flier on Wings at the Speed of Sound. Half of the material is sung by Paul McCartney, half by the rest of the band (guess which half is better). Paul’s tracks include the classic “Let ‘Em In” (a return to the subdued sounds of “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey”) and the slightly discofied but ageless “Silly Love Songs.” On the other turkey wing, you have Jimmy McCulloch’s depressing “Wino Junko” and Linda McCartney setting the woman’s movement back ten years with “Cook of the House.” Not that Paul used his free time away from the mike to write better material; “Warm and Beautiful,” “She’s My Baby” and “San Ferry Anne” are pretty, but calling them sleepers is a stretch. Denny Laine does contribute one rocking track, “Time to Hide,” and for a brief moment Wings almost sounds like Cream, but the mirage is soon dispelled by Joe English’s laidback cameo on “Must Do Something About It.” Stylistically, Wings at the Speed of Sound is a continuation of the music explored on Venus & Mars, though more intimate. Tracks from that album -- “Spirits of Ancient Egypt,” “Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People” -- would have felt at home on here as well. But there’s little on this album beyond the first two singles to warrant the purchase (and fortunately you can find both on Wings Greatest). In other words, no harm done if you let Wings at the Speed of Sound pass you by.
