UK households benefit from flat prices as strong pound and cheap oil keep inflation at

Consumer prices index data for July is expected to show inflation was 0 per cent, unmoved on the previous month. Any figure higher than 0.1 per cent will see the pound strengthen as the currency markets bet that interest rates will go up sooner. Interest rate hikes have been delayed by the Bank of England as despite economic growth prices across the UK economy have flatlined in recent months.

The London market closed broadly flat today, shrugging off a fall in Morrisons' stock after a report that it was closing in a deal to sell 160 M-Local stores. It came as the wider FTSE 100 struggled for direction as it fell just 0.4 points to 6550.3. Sterling was little changed against the US dollar at just under 1.56, and against the euro at a slightly less than 1.41.

Once taxes and essentials have been paid for, savers had on average 9.7 per cent of their salary, or £240 a month based on an average salary of £2,464, to spend on extras as of July.

There are some regions where, however, this does not apply, with London's most valuable properties on 'streets' and Scotland's homes in 'closes' carrying the highest prices. Across the UK as a whole, homes on lanes are priced on average at £245,906, which is 22 per cent or £44,600 more than the typical UK house price, at £201,246, according to research for Barclays Mortgages.
