Mark Clattenburg gave great demonstration of his refereeing ability in Chelsea win... his decision to send off John Terry was correct

Mark Clattenburg gave a great demonstration of his refereeing ability and the self-assurance required to take big decisions.

A penalty against the champions, however clear, was followed by a red card for their captain John Terry, which shows that the Geordie referee was not affected by past incidents with Chelsea.

First things first and Nemanja Matic continued his poor start to the season when clearly tripping Callum McManaman in just the 13th minute for a penalty to West Brom. Thibaut Courtois saved the spot kick but Clattenburg’s big decisions did not finish there.

With Chelsea seemingly heading for a good away win and 3-1 ahead, Terry’s lack of speed was exposed with a good through ball to Salomon Rondon.

The Baggies striker was through on goal when Terry pulled him back just outside the penalty area.

Clattenburg took a second to assess the situation and correctly stopped play and dismissed the former England skipper.

All in all a very good display of officiating and a testing start to the season continues for Jose Mourinho and his team; at least he won’t have to worry about dropping Terry next week.
