Paul Scholes has questioned Louis van Gaal's assessment of Manchester United's 'fantastic' display in the goalless draw at home to Newcastle on Saturday and admitted he is frightened by the firepower of neighbours Manchester City.
After being held by Steve McClaren's side in the Premier League at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said United 'can be satisfied about the performance' and that 'we played as a team fantastic.'
Former United midfielder Scholes disagreed strongly and believes with Van Gaal's expenditure at the club approaching £250million, the Dutchman needs to lead a title charge, something he cannot see happening this season.

United were kept at bay by a stubborn Newcastle defence as they dropped points at Old Trafford on Saturday
'He said "fantastic" a few times. I didn't really think there was anything fantastic about it at all,' Scholes said on BT Sport. 'You are at home to Newcastle, you are expected to win the game. The visiting keeper has one save to make. Fantastic? No, not for me.'
Scholes believes that a manager with Van Gaal's record across Europe should be enticing better performances from his side.
United have won their first two games 1-0 in underwhelming displays at home to Tottenham and away to Aston Villa.
'The pedigree is there, he has managed some great clubs, the top clubs in Europe. I think now, with the money he has been given, he needs to produce. He needs to do it this season.
Scholes questioned where United's goals are going to come from when Wayne Rooney (left) is not scoring
Rooney drew a blank again after a difficult start to the season while leading the line for Van Gaal's side
'I think they will definitely finish top four. If you look at last season, when they played the top teams, they were very good against them. They just need to get that consistency. Can they win it? I'm not too sure.
'City frighten me, the goals you see in that team is incredible. I look at our team and I just don't see the same goal threat. I don't see goals from anywhere.
'If Wayne's (Rooney) not scoring, who is going to score? Chicarito possibly, we know Memphis is capable. But I just don't think everybody is chipping in to the goal count which is what you need.'

Scholes says City's goal threat, which includes Raheem Sterling and Sergia Aguero, 'frigthens me'
Speaking to BT Sport, Van Gaal said: 'I think we can be satisfied about the performance but not about the result because we didn't reward ourselves. We created a lot of chances, we were unlucky.
'We played as a team fantastic and we have fought until the end. That's fantastic to see and you have heard the fans. I like these kind of games, just the result is bad.'
